The Hothouse in London

The Hothouse – Pinter’s back in town!

Part of the Trafalgar Transformed season, Harold Pinter’s remarkable commentary on the abuse of power is back in the West End, long awaited and tipped to delight critics and audiences alike. With outstanding stage design by Soutra Gilmour, this is seriously good theatre for serious theatre lovers!

The Hothouse - The story

The scene is some sort of government run asylum, rest home or state institution. The inmates, sometimes called residents, have numbers instead of names. And the place is in a state of chaos with Roote, the psychopathic boss, rebellious staff, rampant violence, lawlessness and cruelty.

When one inmate is murdered and another falls pregnant after being raped, the ambitious Gibbs and Roote’s calculating and shrewd mistress, who is also involved with Gibbs, become embroiled in an investigation that eventually leads to Roote’s downfall and Gibbs’ taking over the administration of the place… whatever the place is. We never find out, which adds spice and mystery to an already uncomfortable and thought-provoking plot.

Many critics feel The Hothouse is a searing but funny indictment of institutional bureaucracy. The comedy is as black as it comes and the absurdity of the institution’s hierarchy hints at the playwright’s later and less subtle political commentaries, things like the powerful The New World Order and Mountain Language.

Third time even luckier!

The play first appeared at the Hampstead Theatre in April 1980, transferring to The Ambassador in late June the same year and directed by the man himself, Pinter. A revival of The Hothouse, directed by Ian Rickson, took the stage at the Lyttelton theatre in The Royal National Theatre complex during 2007. Now it’s back, given a fresh lick of talent and set to thrill discerning audiences again.
