Two Strangers (carry a cake across New York) in London

Starring:

Dujonna Gift, Sam Tutty

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)

A new British musical from writers Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, Two Strangers is directed by Tim Jackson. Jim Barne is a composer and orchestrator, half of the musical theatre writing duo Buchan & Barne. He’s written music for film, theatre and chart music acts. Kit Buchan is a writer, lyricist and poet. His poems have appeared in Clinic, The White Review, Magma and The Best British Poetry.

The musical is billed as ‘refreshingly original’, part rom, two parts com, with a splash of culture clash.’ The Daily Mail says it “crackles with quality gags and lyrics" and The Independent says “You’ll be captivated by this seasonal gem of a musical". The Telegraph calls it "An irresistibly sweet treat” and the FT says "Tutty and Gift make a great double act... Both have voices that could melt snow".

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) West End Transfer

This gorgeous musical was first produced by the Royal & Derngate Northampton and New Wolsey Ipswich, originally called ‘The Season’. Developed through the Stiles and Drewe MTI Mentorship Award, the West End transfer follows a smash hit run at the Kiln Theatre. It’s on at the Criterion Theatre from 4th April to 14th July 2024.

A cast of two keeps things focused and endlessly exciting. Sam Tutty and Dujonna Gift star in this refreshingly cheerful musical, a two-hander you’ll adore.

Sam Tutty is probably best known for his title role in the West End production of Dear Evan Hansen. He won a 2020 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his work on Hansen at aged 22, one of the youngest winners of the award. In 2021 he joined the cast of the TV’s Hollyoaks.

Dujonna Gift is a gift of an actor, singer and dancer, loved for performances in some of the West End's biggest musical theatre shows. She recently starred in Cameron Mackintosh's multi-Tony and Olivier-winning smash-hit musical Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) - The Story

Meet sweet Dougal, a naive and 100% positive Brit who’s on his way to New York for his Dad’s second wedding, the father he never knew. At the airport Robin, the bride’s sister, awaits him, a tough native New Yorker who’s late for work and hasn’t time for sightseeing. This is not a case of instant attraction. Far from it. But this is New York, there’s romance in the air, and anything could happen.

Male lead a real talent

Music very forgettable but the actors were strong and winning, and we laughed and enjoyed.

Flipping outstanding

Wow what an amazing two hander show, we laughed (a lot) I cried and was totally absorbed by the story. The music was great, the singing was outstanding and when Sam Tutty cried in one scene, I blubbered too! Best thing we have seen in ages - don’t miss it

Review: TWO STRANGERS (CARRY A CAKE ACROSS NEW YORK) at Criterion Theatre

by Stuart King | Wednesday, April 24 2024, 08:29

Piccadilly Circus was a-buzz last evening as the crowds gathered for the much anticipated opening of TWO STRANGERS (CARRY A CAKE ACROSS NEW YORK) at the Criterion Theatre. This reviewer was unable to see the earlier staging at the Kiln in Kilburn, North London back in November last year. Thankfully the positive buzz around the show, helped secure this transfer, affording theatregoers another opportunity to catch it in the West End. So, what is it about and is it worth seeing?
