Ulster American in London

Starring:

Andy Serkis, Louisa Harland, Woody Harrelson

An Oscar-winning American actor, an English director and a Northern Irish playwright are about to begin rehearsals for a new play — one that could transform each of their careers. But when it turns out that they’re not on the same page, the night threatens to spiral out of control.

Power dynamics, cultural identity and the perils of being a woman in the entertainment industry; nothing is off limits in this pitch-black comedy from the award-winning playwright David Ireland.

Don’t miss this exclusive 8 week run starring Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis and Louisa Harland, directed by Jeremy Herrin (Best of Enemies, People, Places and Things).

Please note: that there is strictly no late admission for this production, and no re-admittance should a patron leave once it has started.

Fantastic performances

I found the production hilarious and very well acted although there was a lot of swearing which might offend some people.

gratuitous hibernophobia

This was a complex play about identity and politics and how politics often has more to do with ego than with reality... illiberal 'liberals', mysogynistic 'feminists', racial ignorance and racism in those who see themselves as vehemently opposed to racism. But, there actually was only one screamingly racist comment... about Irish sibling pigs having sex, I think... I was beyond flabbergasted. There were, rightly, no frank racist comments about BIPOC, just a send up of white men trying to be anti-racist. The hypothetical rape crossed a line- not at all funny and not acceptable. It was both offensive and crudely conceived. The only actor who played the part in a believable way was the Ulster unionist. Perhaps this is because the parts were too unbelievable. I only stayed out of curiosity- the audience reaction was psychophantic. Woody Harrelson is a good actor but he should have done what his character did, and turn down the part.

Review: ULSTER AMERICAN at Riverside Studios

by Stuart King | Wednesday, December 13 2023, 23:17

West London was awash with celebs for Wednesday evening’s opening of David Ireland’s comedy drama ULSTER AMERICAN which premiered at Riverside Studios Hammersmith, to a universally rapturous ovation from the enthralled audience… but what will critics make of it (especially when they were repeatedly disparaged during several actor-y onslaughts)?
