Visionaries: Robbins and MacMillan - Royal Ballet and Opera in London
This mixed programme features Jerome Robbins's Dances at a Gathering and Kenneth MacMillan's Song of the Earth. In Dances at a Gathering, Robbins's energetic choreography is set to Fryderyk Chopin's most beloved piano melodies, underpinning a series of plotless dances, each a portrait of human connection and shifting moods. It was his first creation for the New York City Ballet in 1969, famously known for its lack of story and esoteric narratives. In Song of the Earth, Gustav Mahler's score is brought to life by MacMillan's elegiac, earthbound choreography, exploring the transience of life and imminence of death. It is inspired by 8th century Chinese poetry, and was initially rejected for its dark themes before finally premiering with the Stuttgart Ballet in 1965.
