Accidental Death of an Anarchist in London

Accidental Death of an Anarchist – Starring Daniel Rigby

This fantastic play has already enjoyed a critically acclaimed, sell-out run at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. Now Accidental Death of an Anarchist transfers to the West End for a strictly limited run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. On stage from 12th June 2023 to 9th September for a strictly limited run, Playful Productions presents the Sheffield Theatres and Lyric Hammersmith Theatre co-production of this classic political satire, with the talented Daniel Rigby at the helm.

Accidental Death of an Anarchist is written by Dario Fo and Franca Rame and this is a fresh new adaptation by Tom Basden. Directed by Daniel Raggett, the performance includes smoke, haze, strobe lighting, flashing and blinding lights, loud music, and unexpected extremely noisy sound effects. It’s also stacked with references that some people might find ‘upsetting’ and ‘unsettling’, a sign that it’s an unusually good piece of theatre!

Accidental Death of an Anarchist theatre tickets whisk you to a story that the media is loving all over again. The Daily Mail calls it a fierce farce to make the Met squirm. The Reviews Hub says Daniel Rigby is beyond fantastic, What's On Stage says it is glorious chaos, and Metro calls it a British state-of-the-nation satire that simply must not be missed. Broadway World agrees, rating it as rocket-paced, deeply political, and utterly hilarious.

The story is inspired by a real-life 1969 scandal. The anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli died after falling from a fourth-floor window in the Italian police station, where he was being interrogated about a Milan terrorist bomb attack that killed 17 people.

The brilliant Daniel Rigby plays the Maniac, with Tony Gardner as Superintendent Curry. The full West End cast will be announced nearer the time. Daniel Raggett directs, the set and costume design is by Anna Reid, the lighting design by Jai Morjaria, and the sound design and composition by Annie May Fletcher.

What's the plot of Accidental Death of an Anarchist?

So how does the plot pan out? An anarchist has fallen to his death from a police station. But did he jump or was he pushed? The police are keen to avoid another scandal, so they find a mysterious imposter to arrest and bring in for questioning. He takes them through an increasingly ridiculous reconstruction of their story, exposing a series of crazy police cover-ups, corruption, and deep stupidity.

After dazzling sold out runs at Sheffield Theatres and the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, this hilarious farce delivers a bang-up-to-date version of the original play that cheerfully destroys everyone from the Metropolitan Police to the metropolitan elite. The BAFTA Award winner Daniel Rigby is quite extraordinary, making theatre tickets for Accidental Death of an Anarchist hot property.

Absolutely brilliant

A fantastic update of Dario Fo's classic tale. The lead actor is a whirlwind! Definitely one not to be missed.

Great version

I've seen several 'accidental deaths'over the years, and this version, with updated script and great set - as well as fine performances - is a farce Mr Fo would be proud of. I personally found the sound a little off, which may be the set, but was more likely my bad lug holes.

Manic

Absolutely manic most of the time with loads of laugh out loud moments while still making important political points.

Hilarious but poignant

A minimalist scene packed with fast action and snappy dialogue. A troublesome subject dissected with humour, wit andhonesty. This kind of theatre should never go out of fashion. A hell of a ride.

a memorable experience

Two hours of relentless rapid fire farcical comedy with a biting satirical undertone. The original Italian play has been updated and relocated to London making the cultural references more accessible. Outstanding performances. Best - and by a distance the funniest - show I've seen in some time.

Fantastic performances. The best political satire I’ve seen in a long while.

Review: ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST at Haymarket Theatre

At the heart of Dario Fo’s 1970 satire, is a desire to expose the oft ridiculous web of lies and deceit used to cover-up incidents stemming from abuses of power. An anarchist dies whilst being interrogated in police custody. But did he jump from the window or was he pushed?
