Boris Godunov has been crowned Tsar of Russia after a blood-soaked rise to power that resulted in the murder of the nine-year-old heir to the throne, Dmitry. Haunted by guilt and plagued by paranoia, the Tsar's sanity begins to unravel. As he fights to cling to power in a turbulent Russia, a young man in neighbouring Poland spots an opportunity to seize the throne through a ruthless military campaign and by claiming to be the real prince Dmitry.
Inspired by the Time of Troubles and the clash between Tsar Boris Godunov and the False Dmitry in the 1600s, Modest Mussorgsky's 19th century opera is a timeless classic about war, ambition, revenge, and the lengths men go to in pursuit of power. Richard Jones's acclaimed staging of this awe-inspiring, epic story will come to London in 2026, with Bryn Terfel starring as the tormented Tsar and Mark Wigglesworth conducting. Based on the 1825 tragedy written by Russian poet and playwright, Alexander Pushkin, which in turn was inspired by Shakespeare, this dark, brooding opera is a visceral psychodrama that interrogates the corrupting effects of power through thrilling drama, complex characters, and a breath-taking score.
