CARE in London
This moving, powerful story about ageing, family, and loss follows an elderly grandmother who’s forced to leave her home and her family, which includes a single mother of two squabbling preteens, and into a care home after she takes a fall. There, she’s surrounded by other elderly people, all missing home as they grapple with this new and uncertain phase in their lives. But soon she begins to find the unexpected joy in life’s everyday moments and recognise what really matters.
This heartrending play is written and directed by Alexander Zeldin (LOVE, The Confessions, The Other Place), who makes his Young Vic debut and anticipated return to London after the sweeping success of his Inequalities trilogy - praised as ‘like no one else’s’ by the Guardian. CARE is a translation and adaptation of his original play, Une Mort Dans La Famille, which was first performed at Ateliers Berthiers in 2022.
Don’t miss this tender portrait about the powerful connections between family, ageing, loss, and the meaning of home, which is sure to tug on your heartstrings.

Care - a story affecting us allThe show brings home some things I have witnessed personally during my career with ambulances and fuses it with more personal family experiences, including the loss of loved ones. This play should be on the educational curriculum.

Brilliant actingAmazing cast who were all brilliant. The play set out some very pertinent issues and there was a lot to digest but it didn’t feel very complete. The dark parts didn’t work very well for me. I think there was a lot there but it was a bit shapeless. Please bear in mind that that’s just me and I have no qualification to critique a play. The reviews have been good and the play was good but!

Outstanding acting, and meticulous in detail. It highlights the awful way old people, whether rich or poor, are treated, and this country’s view of old age .

A very powerful play that stays with you afterwardsI thought ‘Care’ was a very relevant play for our modern society, with superb performances, and excellent stage setting, production and writing. It had both humorous and darker elements, including dealing with death, and really captured the essence of the modern-day care home. It showed the potential distress of arrival of a new resident and the angst experienced by families entrusting their loved ones to a completely unknown community of people, and (as I have witnessed) the occasional conflicts, discomfort and turmoil that can occur. I did think that an interval would have been appropriate, and the seats were a little firm! However it was a brilliant and poignant evening that will stay with me for a long while.
