Cloud 9 in London
Clive is a colonial administrator and patriarch in British-colonial Africa in the Victorian era, while his wife, son, and servant struggle to live up to what’s expected of them. When Clive and his family end up in 1979 London, they're forced to confront a world where empire lingers and freedom calls. With Churchill’s trademark sly audaciousness, Cloud 9 relentlessly satirises Victorian society and colonialism in its first arc, before using the second arc to show what happens when these restrictions are loosened.
Written in 1979 by British playwright Caryl Churchill (Top Girls) this daring and satirical classic explores gender, power and the legacies of empire with audacious theatricality and razor-sharp wit. Dominic Cooke (Mrs Warren’s Profession) directs a bold new production of Churchill’s landmark work and one of his most renowned works, featured in the Royal National Theatre’s poll of 100 most significant plays and Time Out New York’s list of best plays of all time. It stars Rebecca Humphries, Eloka Ivo, Tom Mothersdale, Charlotte Ritchie, Ellen Robertson, Stuart Thompson and Sam Troughton as the eclectic and eccentric cast of characters.
Don’t miss this modern classic from one of Britain’s most influential playwrights.
