Gerry & Sewell in London

Written and directed by Olivier Award-winner Jamie Eastlake, this play from the North East follows two young men in Gateshead, Gerry and Sewell, who are on a quest to get their hands on season tickets for the Premier League so they can watch their beloved football club, Newcastle United, play. Based on Jonathan Tulloch's novel The Season Ticket, which was adapted into the Geordie cult classic film Purely Belter, Gerry & Sewell began life as a small play in a 60-seat pub, and now it's heading to the West End for a limited two-week run, so London audiences can experience this funny, heartwarming story of friendship, loyalty, determination, and chasing your dreams.

From Laurel's pub in North Tyneside to a sell-out run at the Newcastle Theatre Royal to London's West End, the show's rise in popularity mirrors its story about two underdogs defying the odds. Blending live music and puppet dogs, Gerry & Sewell is an uplifting celebration of working-class life and a love for football. It stars Dean Logan, Jack Robertson and Becky Clayburn, all making their West End debuts, alongside Erin Mullen. Described as “hard-hitting with Geordie passion in spades” (Living North), Gerry & Sewell is sure to charm and inspire you no matter where you come from.

Don't miss this love letter to Newcastle and a celebration of the regional stories that don't always get told.

A Geordie exile

I flew in from the USA Today and as I am originally from Newcastle I thought this would be an interesting show to see. I have read the book, The Season Ticket, so was familiar with the story line. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was funny and sad at the same time. The acting and performance was outstanding, I would highly recommend.

Life-enhancing but patchy!

This show began in a very small venue and has not quite made the leap to a bigger theatre (outside Newcastle, where it must have had a lot of football fans already onside). If you are expecting a slick and glossy West End production, this is not for you! Great acting by the main protagonists, but the story was disjointed and at times quite hard to follow; the musical and dance interludes were good in parts but there were either too few or too many! For a show with musical ambitions, they were maybe too few and too bitty. I longed for the seemingly considerable potential to let rip more: these parts of the show needed a more sustained energy. Despite these criticisms, and the depressing backdrop, all in all seeing the show was a joyous experience, and the puppets were wonderful!

Fantastic West End move

This amazing show started in a small social club in Newcastle. It is now in the West End! So well deserved; it is great. It has the pub theatre vibe combined with West End energy.

Amateurish

Very disappointed. We thought it would be funny, original and more about their relationship with the football club. It was old hat about the "impoverished overlooked" north ( I am from the north) Not impressed with the acting or the production as a whole.

So so good, a gem of a show!!! Hilarious, heartwarming, thoughtful. Such a good night!

Everyone needs to go see this, it was such a good show. So so funny!! The audience were laughing from the rooftops. With touches of real life struggles a lot of us can relate to. Such a great atmosphere at a really cosy theatre

LIVELY

The show was a lot of fun. Some ver funny and touching moments. Good use of music. Found the storyline confusing at times. The core idea - trying to find ways to find money to get season tickets got lost. Lead actors were very good.
