Our colourful and big-hearted new musical returns for Christmas.
Deep in the wood, a lonely fairy longs for someone to bless.
When she is summoned to the palace to help the princess sleep, her dream turns into a nightmare and her blessing becomes a curse.
Soon, she is plunged into a frantic, hundred-year quest to somehow make everything right.
Rufus Norris directs this vividly original retelling of the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ fairy tale with music by Jim Fortune, book by Tanya Ronder, designs by Katrina Lindsay and choreography by Jade Hackett.

Certainly there's middle-of-the-road, untaxing entertainment here, but it is not tight, clever, significant, noteworthy or especially magical, which is perhaps the greatest disappointment given the subject, the stage and the time taken to deliver the production.
A fabulous musical then, just a shame about the music. But there is so much originality, quirkiness and creative magic here that it puts us under its spell.
Rufus Norris and Katrina Lindsay have put a new spin on the fairy behind the curse in the classic tale. It’s a delight.

Review: HEX at the National Theatre

After considerable initial anticipation, (mired by a spate of unfortunate Covid cancellations), Rufus Norris announced the postponement of HEX’s original National Theatre opening nearly 12 months ago. This week, assembling at the Olivier a year on, press night attendees, (many of whom were earnestly hoping for an end to the disquieting run of mediocre offerings from that period of the National’s recent past), finally got to assess for themselves the work on which so many reputations seemed to depend just a short while ago.
