I puritani in London
It's the 17th century, and England is a nation divided, between the Puritans who celebrated the execution of King Charles I and the Royalists who dream of a return to the monarchy. Elvira, a Puritan maiden, is in love with Arturo, a Royalist. Her father reluctantly approves the match, but their wedding day is interrupted when Arturo leaves to rescue a Royalist prisoner, leaving a heartbroken Elvira convinced he's abandoned her for another woman. As she descends into madness and Arturo, accused of treason, faces execution, the couple faces the ultimate test to their faith and devotion to either. Can love thrive during a civil war?
Richard Jones's stunning new staging of Vicenzo Bellini's last opera is packed with virtuosic coloratura passages and ethereal, otherworldly arias. I puritani is a powerful, emotionally profound opera that explores the tenderness of love and the anguish of loss in a world defined by conflict and divisions. Blending melancholy with fiery lyricism, Bellini's last opera introduces one of his most endearing and cherished heroines, Elvira, whose descent from girlish optimism to madness will break your heart. Lisette Oropesa stars as the devoted Elvira and Francesco Demuro as the courageous Arturo, with Conductor Riccardo Frizza making his debut with The Royal Opera.
Step into the 2026 opera season with this vibrant, heartrending story of love, duty, and faith during the English Civil War.
