J'Ouvert description

Sonia Friedman Productions has been busy, busy, busy while the nation has been locked down, producing three deliciously contemporary new plays to thrill audiences at the Harold Pinter theatre. The fun kicks off in May and each of the three new productions comes with loads of glittering star quality built in. Are you ready to re:emerge?

What's the plot of J'Ouvert?

J'Ouvert whisks us to the Notting Hill Carnival where we meet Jade and Nadine, who are battling to find a space in a world that actually should be theirs. Echoing centuries of Caribbean resistance, this joyous story is a fearless examination of two friends who want to preserve tradition in a society where female bodies are often threatened.

Originating in Theatre503 as a co-production with Bad Breed and Tobi Kyeremateng, this is the debut play of James Tait Black Award-winner Yasmin Joseph, as well as the directing debut of the actor Rebekah Murrell who wowed us in Nine Night. Annice Boparai of Trojan Horse, Gabrielle Brooks from Twelfth Night, Sapphire Joy from Our Country’s Good and DJ Zuyane Russell weave this epic tale.

Who is J'Ouvert for?

All three plays are beautifully thought-out adult pieces, not suitable for children.
