Lyonesse in London

Starring:

Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James

Lyonesse – A dazzling new play by Penelope Skinner

In the Arthurian stories, ancient Lyonesse was a kingdom stretching from Land's End at the south west tip of Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly in the Celtic Sea. Legend says the mysterious kingdom was swallowed up by the sea overnight. It’s also a remarkable new ‘searing and passionate’ play of the same name, written by the playwright Penelope Skinner and starring the brilliant Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James. The drama starts on October 17th 2023 and runs until 23rd December.

Penelope Skinner won the George Devine Award and the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright for The Village Bike in 2011. Lyonesse is directed by Ian Rickson and your venue is the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre. Lyonesse theatre tickets treat you to a play produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, responsible for some of theatreland’s best-loved and respected productions: The Book of Mormon, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, and Stranger Things: The First Shadow, awaited with excitement and on stage in London before long.

As Penelope Skinner said, “I’m a huge admirer of both Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James, and am so grateful for Sonia Friedman’s faith and vision in giving this new play a home in the West End,” “I was inspired to write Lyonesse after wondering what would happen if the dramatic action of a traditional revenge tragedy was flipped, so that the story instead became about the person upon whom revenge had been sworn.”

Lily James is equally excited. “When I received Penelope Skinner’s brilliant play, I read it in one sitting and adored it – I was utterly gripped by these strong, original characters. To work with Sonia Friedman again is an absolute dream but most importantly, I am so happy to be reunited with my friend, Kristin Scott Thomas.”

Lyonesse is designed by Georgia Lowe, who thrilled us with her 2022 work on Henry VIII at The Globe, Anna Karenina at the Crucible Theatre, and The Trials at the Donmar Warehouse. Lighting comes from Jessica Hung Han Yun, who recently lit the RSC’s My Neighbour Totoro at the Barbican. The music comes from Oscar-winner Stephen Warbeck, and the sound from Tingying Dong.

What's the plot of Lyonesse?

Lyonesse tells the story of Elaine, played by Scott Thomas. She’s a reclusive actor who emerges from 30 years of solitude. Keen to share what happened to her, she asks the young film executive Kate, played by James, to her home in Cornwall to support her comeback. BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas and Golden Globe nominee Lily James are due to make a fabulous job of the play’s central themes of creativity, purpose, isolation, violence, magic and mothers.

Who is Lyonesse for?

Lyonesse is recommended for people aged 14 or more.

The acting was outstanding throughout by the whole cast.

The ending of the play was disappointing for both the main protagonists .Were they both disappointed dreamers or are women still suffering in a patriarchal system that prevails ah !!!

Light weight plot saved by great acting

The story line was not inspired and did not encourage much empathy with the main character but the cast saved the day by their acting. Nevertheless the underlying misogyny of the story was deftly treated and surely resonated with many. Overall we left the theatre having enjoyed the show.
