Marriage Material in London

Marriage Material is a powerful new play based on Sathnam Sanghera's acclaimed novel of the same name, itself inspired by Arnold Bennett’s classic book The Old Wives’ Tale. Welcome to a sweeping family drama delivering a microcosm of the South Asian experience in the UK.

Marriage Material the story

Set between 1969 and the 2020s, you'll meet the Bains family whose corner shop has sat at the heart of their life for three generations. Mr Bains senior is in poor health, looked after by his wife, and his two daughters are headstrong and demanding. When tragedy brings Arjan Bains back from London, he is forced to confront the life he abandoned. Will he end up running the shop he has tried so hard to run away from? If so, how long can he bear to stay?

This sweeping family drama explores the tensions, ambitions and legacy of a Punjabi family in Wolverhampton, a rich, emotional look at what family, identity and belonging mean.

Marriage Material cast and creatives

The play has been adapted by award winning playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti (A Kind of People) and is directed by Iqbal Khan (East Is East). It's based on the novel by Sathnam Sanghera, who also wrote the novels Empireland, The Boy With the Topknot, and Empireworld. The Producers are Lyric Hammersmith and Birmingham Rep.

Review: MARRIAGE MATERIAL at Lyric Hammersmith

by Stuart King | Thursday, May 29 2025, 16:06

It’s the late 1960s and two teenage Punjabi sisters, part of a close-knit Sikh family in Wolverhampton, learn what it means to be part of a community which is forced to fight for acceptance and respect, whilst never losing sight of its history, traditions, culture and aspirations.
