Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell in London

The Midnight Bell is inspired by the novels of Patrick Hamilton, who wrote extensively about the grim realities of seedy, alcohol-soaked 1930s Soho, now retold through the medium of dance by master storyteller Matthew Bourne. At the heart of the show is the titular Midnight Bell tavern, where an eclectic motley crew of characters gather to chase their passions and dreams.

The Midnight Bell first premiered in 2021, to five nominations and two awards at the 2022 National Dance Awards. The Guardian called it ‘a poignant, chilling, and understated portrait of love, lust, and longing’. This revival opens at Sadler’s Wells Theatre for a limited run from 10th to 21st June - book now and don’t miss this bleak but powerful explanation of humanity in the heart of London.

Review: THE MIDNIGHT BELL at Sadler’s Wells

by Stuart King | Friday, June 20 2025, 11:18

Intoxicated tales from darkest Soho in the form of Matthew Bourne’s THE MIDNIGHT BELL, eschews Noel Coward’s passé and draws favourable comparison with the grittier elements of 1930s London found in the works of Graham Greene and Somerset Maugham.
