Review of Wicked

Wicked What is this feeling, so sudden and new? My excitement at seeing Wicked again, that’s what! Kerry Ellis returns to this record breaking show in a blaze of green glory.

In my mind, a show like Wicked needs no introduction; it’s hard to imagine walking through London Victoria without seeing the eye-catching green signs adorning the Apollo Victoria Theatre. After winning over 100 international awards and defining the careers of many musical theatre performers, I have to remind myself that Wicked has only been around for 9 years. But like any musical, it often goes through cast changes to keep the performances fresh. So I went along to watch this spectacle once again but now with a new leading lady playing the green witch Elphaba herself.

Review of Lord of The Dance

Lord of The Dance Dance now wherever you may be! Michael Flatley may have given up his crown as the Lord of the Dance but I still watched this show in a state of childlike glee… for the most part.

I remember being 5 or 6 years old and dancing round the living room to a VHS tape of Michael Flatley’s ‘Riverdance’. Of course at the time I thought I was as good as the man himself, but even then the poise and precision of the dancers, the beautiful Gaelic music and the almost ethereal costumes always held a magical quality for me. So when I entered the London Palladium to watch Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games, all of those memories came flooding back.

Review of Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! Musical Sometimes I get a gut feeling about whether I’m going to enjoy a production before I’ve even walked through the door. Normally I mistake this for hunger and grab a chocolate bar that I really don’t need, but this time as I walked through the doors of the Novello Theatre I had an uneasy feeling telling me that I was not going to be impressed by this show. But, Mamma Mia! has been running for 16 years and is still going strong, so I told myself to watch it with an open mind. Now don’t get me wrong, I love ABBA and can often be found belting out Dancing Queen in a karaoke bar or on a dance floor. I figured that I would spend the evening happily singing along to a corny show with a crazy storyline and great performances. I should have listened to my first gut feeling.

Review of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Given the cast listing for this show, I expected to like it more than I did. Give the songs more punch and the acting more flair.

My flatmate’s mum used to work with Robert Lindsay when he was just starting out as an actor – now he’s best known for playing Ben Harper from the hit TV show My Family. So when I told her I was going to see him in his latest West End role she asked me to say hello from her mum. Of course I didn’t, but I did go along to the Savoy Theatre and stepped back in time for a few hours to experience its latest offering, reminiscent of (and possibly inspired by) the American classic Guys and Dolls. Now I always have mixed opinions about how well musicals set in this era are staged today, having been recently disappointed by Top Hat (Aldwych Theatre) and Singin’ in the Rain (Palace Theatre). But I went along hoping that this show would buck the trend – it did not.

Review: The Crucible

The Crucible If I could give it 6 stars, I would! Any high school class studying the play should see this production to truly appreciate it. Any aspiring actors should too, it’s a real masterclass.

This summer’s ‘In the Round’ season at the Old Vic was pretty much a guaranteed trio of hits as soon as they were announced. Clarence Darrow (a one man play with Kevin Spacey), The Crucible (directed by Yael Farber) and Electra (Ian Rickson directing Kristin Scott Thomas) – anyone can see how quickly tickets would sell for these performances. So when I managed to get tickets for The Crucible, I was excited before I even stepped foot into the theatre. And my amazement only grew from that moment onward.
