Michael Jackson was one of the most popular entertainers of all time. His dance skills made him a legend, inspiring the world to moonwalk. His albums sold in their millions. Now his unique artistry is being showcased in a brand-new musical.
The show focuses on the making of Jackson’s legendary 1992 Dangerous World Tour. Created by the Tony winning Director and Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, in cahoots with the twice-Pulitzer Prize winning writer Lynn Nottage, it’s about so much more than the music. This is a jukebox musical with a difference, containing more than 25 of MJ’s brilliant songs, and while MJ has all the moves it also reveals the extraordinary mind and creative spirit behind the tunes.
MJ The Musical was due to premiere on Broadway in mid-2020 but fell victim to Covid. Ephraim Sykes was originally cast as Jackson but was replaced by Myles Frost in June 2021. When it finally opened the show had mixed reviews from critics, but audiences knew better. Along with the Tony won by Myles Frost it won Tonys for Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. The original cast recording scored equally high, netting a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. January 2024 saw the Broadway production grossing a mighty $170.9 million, seen by more than 1.1 million people.
An impressive cast and creative team
A fantastic cast joins Myles Frost. Ashley Zhangazha (Tina) plays Joseph Jackson / Rob. Mitchell Zhangazha (Ain't Too Proud) plays Michael, Philippa Stefani (Wicked) is Rachel, and Phebe Edwards (The Lion King) plays Katherine Jackson / Kate.
Matt Mills (Dream Girls) portrays Berry Gordy / Nick, while Rohan Pinnock-Hamilton (Get Up Stand Up) is Tito Jackson / Quincy Jones. Matt Gonsalves (Dear Evan Hansen) is Alejandro, and Jon Tsouras (Sunset Boulevard) plays Dave.
The creative team is equally experienced, including Scenic Design by Derek McLane (Moulin Rouge! The Musical), Lighting Design by Natasha Katz (Once), Costume Design by Paul Tazewell (Hamilton), Sound Design by Gareth Owen (Come From Away), Projection Design by Peter Nigrini (Dear Evan Hansen), plus Hair and Wig Design by Charles LaPointe (The Color Purple). Musical Supervision is by David Holcenberg (Matilda The Musical), and the Orchestrations and Arrangements are by David Holcenberg and Jason Michael Webb (The Color Purple).

Spectacularly done!I took my 10 year old son to see MJ Musical at the Prince Edward Theatre in London on 29-May-25. We had not seen the trailer or learned about the show before our visit, so I was thinking that the show was akin to a concert, with the actors singing and dancing Michael Jackson's most popular songs back-to-back. This wasn't the case, but I was pleasantly surprised with the arrangement of the show, which took the audience through key moments of Michael's life up to when he started his Dangerous tour. It was spectacularly done! All the actors were superb, but the actor that played Michael (André Phipps) really did shine - and literally!

Colorful but very slow...The authors decided to give attention to Mickael Jackson's personal story by going deep into his relationship with his father and his own family, but the show comes across as slow and does not enhance Michael's music and energy. (Too much time talking about the Jackson 5.) Fantastic sets, costumes and dancers, but unfortunately I found it boring at times.

A Must See For EverybodyI went with my wife, and 3 daughters (ages 16, 14 and 10) and we all thoroughly enjoyed the show, returning again 4 months later to watch it again!. It is unlike any other show we have seen - by far the best theatre production I have seen in my 35 years of theatre attendance. Everything is borderline perfection - the music, lighting, sound, costumes, storyline, pacing, dancing, acting, and oh the vocals ! Just incredible. Whether you are an MJ fan or not, don't debate this - just go ! You will be positively thinking and talking about it for weeks later.

MJ story without a storyThe musical is a series of MJ hits arranged in a chronological order as he tells the story of his success to an interviewer. In my opinion, the story lacks a true character. MJ is shown as a lonely person not willing to talk about his life that is perhaps true, but some more details would make the story more entertaining. The music is too loud for my taste. All in all, MJ fans were enjoying the show, as I noticed.
