Michael Jackson was one of the most popular entertainers of all time. His dance skills made him a legend, inspiring the world to moonwalk. His albums sold in their millions. Now his unique artistry is being showcased in a brand-new musical.
The show focuses on the making of Jackson’s legendary 1992 Dangerous World Tour. Created by the Tony winning Director and Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, in cahoots with the twice-Pulitzer Prize winning writer Lynn Nottage, it’s about so much more than the music. This is a jukebox musical with a difference, containing more than 25 of MJ’s brilliant songs, and while MJ has all the moves it also reveals the extraordinary mind and creative spirit behind the tunes.
MJ The Musical was due to premiere on Broadway in mid-2020 but fell victim to Covid. Ephraim Sykes was originally cast as Jackson but was replaced by Myles Frost in June 2021. When it finally opened the show had mixed reviews from critics, but audiences knew better. Along with the Tony won by Myles Frost it won Tonys for Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. The original cast recording scored equally high, netting a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. January 2024 saw the Broadway production grossing a mighty $170.9 million, seen by more than 1.1 million people.
An impressive creative team
The creative team is electric, including Scenic Design by Derek McLane (Moulin Rouge! The Musical), Lighting Design by Natasha Katz (Once), Costume Design by Paul Tazewell (Hamilton), Sound Design by Gareth Owen (Come From Away), Projection Design by Peter Nigrini (Dear Evan Hansen), plus Hair and Wig Design by Charles LaPointe (The Color Purple). Musical Supervision is by David Holcenberg (Matilda The Musical), and the Orchestrations and Arrangements are by David Holcenberg and Jason Michael Webb (The Color Purple).
