Once On This Island in London
Set on a Caribbean island in the French Antilles bursting with colour, rhythm, and the unstoppable pulse of folklore, a bold and hopeful peasant girl named Ti Moune saves the life of Daniel, a boy from a different world, and falls deeply in love with him. As death comes for the boy she loves, Ti Moune strikes a bargain with the island' gods, offering her life for his, setting her on an epic journey of love, loss, faith, and hope. Based on the novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, which itself is a Caribbean retelling of The Little Mermaid, Once on This Island first opened on Broadway in 1990 and in the West End in 1994, where it won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Its latest revival was praised as "an aesthetic experience unlike anything seen on Broadway" by the Huffington Post.
With a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, this electrifying musical returns to London for a dazzling one-night-only concert at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. This star-studded evening features Tony Award-winner Alex Newell (Shucked, Chicago) reprising their role as Asaka, Cedric Neal (Guys & Dolls, Hadestown) as Agwe, Melanie La Barrie (&Juliet, Wicked) as Papa Ge and Dujonna Gift (Hamilton, Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York) as Ti Moune. Directed by Anna Mutale-Reed, this is a powerful celebration of passion, sacrifice, and the magic of community, with a vibrant, heart-stirring story and unforgettable Caribbean-inspired music.
Don't miss this one-of-a-kind concert that pays tribute to a stirring, magical, and beloved musical, coming to London for one night only.
