Quadrophenia, a Mod Ballet in London
It's ballet... but not as we know it! Sadler’s Wells and Universal Music UK are delighted to announce the world premiere of Quadrophenia, a Mod Ballet. Prepare to be awed as the sheer power of dance brings a fresh new dimension to the raw energy of The Who's iconic 1973 album.
About Quadrophenia, a Mod Ballet
The plot showcases the emotional turmoil suffered by young Mod Jimmy Cooper, whose only solace in a deadly dull working life is the dancing, partying, drug-taking, scooter riding, and the legendary battles with the Mods' rival Rockers on Brighton beach.
In 1973 Pete Townshend wrote the rock opera album Quadrophenia, The Who's sixth studio album. It sold multi-millions and defined a generation. The 1979 movie, set in 1964 London, delighted millions more of us, a masterpiece starring Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Toyah Wilcox, Philip Davis, Mark Wingett, Sting and Ray Winstone. It was an instant cult classic, inspiring young people across the UK to adopt Mod fashion and hairstyles. For a brief period the fierce fist fights between Mods and their rival Rockers resurfaced in Brighton, causing a moral panic. Now the beloved story is back, this time as an explosive ballet.
The orchestral version of the album by Rachel Fuller scored a hit at The Royal Albert Hall, recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and providing the backdrop for this brilliant production. The ballet involves an enormous cast of amazing dancers, introducing new audiences to Jimmy's legendary story while giving a nod of respect to the much-loved original.
Quadrophenia, a Mod Ballet cast and creatives
Dazzling young dance star Paris Fitzpatrick plays the lead role of Jimmy, winner of the Outstanding Male Modern Performance award at the National Dance Awards for his work as Romeo in Matthew Bourne's company New Adventures’ Romeo and Juliet.
The Writer is Pete Townshend, with Orchestration by Rachel Fuller and Martin Batchelar. The Choreographer is Paul Roberts and the Director is Rob Ashford. Original costumes come from the British fashion design house Paul Smith along with Natalie Pryce, with projection by Nick Hillel and lighting design by Fabiana Piccioli.
The ballet delivers a masterpiece in sharp suits, Northern Soul, Vespa scooters and Parka overcoats. Exploring themes of lost youth, rebellion, the need to belong and the powerful desire for social change, it's no surprise that this plot will still resonate with today's audiences.

Review: QUADROPHENIA at Sadler’s Wells
by Stuart King | Thursday, June 26 2025, 21:57
With such strong source material and an accomplished and technically adept cast, the temptation would have been to simply create a safe, uber-polished piece of dance theatre. Instead the creators of QUADROPHENIA have managed to skirt any potential mundanity by delivering a remarkably fresh and vibrant piece of storytelling - almost a British West Side Story (sans the schmalz). The result, offers Matthew Bourne some competition for supremacy in the genre, with many cast members having previously performed with his New Adventures company.
