Stereophonic in London
Love rock? You'll adore this! Stereophonic, the multi-award-winning Broadway hit, is on route to London to immerse audiences in the electrifying world of rock and roll. 13 Tony award nominations and 5 wins, including Best Play and Best Direction, say it all. Don't miss the most Tony-nominated play of all time.
About Stereophonic
Premiered Off-Broadway in October 2023, the show was named Best Play of the Year by the Washington Post, described as "hands-down the best American play since the pandemic" by ex-New York Times' critic Ben Brantley. It went on to win 'Best of 2023' accolades from the New Yorker, New York Magazine, New York Times, The Wrap, and Time Out New York. It closed Off-Broadway in late 2023 to re-open on Broadway itself, where it closed after a limited run in January 2025.
Stereophonic the story
The action is set in a music studio in 1976 - 77, delving into the highs and lows of a rock band on the road to success. Groundbreaking stuff, it captures the essence of a band on the edge of superstardom as the musicians record a new album, on the verge of a massive hit but at the same time on the cusp of breaking up thanks to the agony, ecstasy and tension of the creative process. Will they break through or fall apart?
Stereophonic cast and creatives
The show stars Andrew R. Butler as Charlie, Tony Award-nominated actor Eli Gelb as Grover and Chris Stack (The Secret Life of Bees, Off-Broadway) as Simon who reprises their roles for the West End production.
The show is written by the respected theatre playwright David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin, and features original music by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler. The Scenic Designer is David Zinn, the Costume Designer is Enver Chakartash and the Lighting Designer is Jiyoun Chang. Sound design comes from Ryan Rumery and the Music Director is Justin Craig. The Orchestrations are by Will Butler and Justin Craig, with Hair and Wig Design by Robert Pickens and Katie Gell, and UK Casting by Julia Horan CDG.
Stereophonic will take audiences on an electrifying portrayal of a 1970s rock band as they navigate creativity and chaos. Heading to the West End this Spring, we predict this to be one of the biggest plays to see in 2025!

Extremely disappointingI heard about the awards and read many positive reviews prior to booking this - but I can’t understand it - almost like they were talking about a different production? Yeah, ok, it’s the story of the making of Rumours but…really? Is this the best you could do? One dimensional, too long, boring, no sympathetic characters, lacking authenticity, cliched, I could go on and on about what rubbish it is but I’d rather not waste any more time - have lost three hours already (our biggest regret - we should have left at half time) PS. I have never left a critical review like this before but this upset me a lot - we felt very let down so I do want to potentially warn others.

Curiously lacking in musicI read that Stereophonic was a 13 time nominated Tony award show and it won the best play in 2024. I went in with high hopes, thinking that a production loosely based on Fleetwood Mac recording the legendary Rumours album would be about music. Unfortunately, it was very wordy and long winded at times, not exactly what I was expecting. The singing and music were the best elements of the play, alas there were not enough of those. Several members of the back row behind us must have felt the same, because five minutes into the second half they all got up and left.

Great if a little long.Great acting, superb sets. Music was excellent. Probably a bit too long given the nature of the plot. But very enjoyable.

DisappointingI had really high hopes for this play, but sadly it didn’t deliver. Found it boring, lacking any plot, long silences and didn’t warm to any of the characters. The characterisation felt heavy handed, they were like cartoon characters. Left before the interval as couldn’t see it improving.
