The elderly Hema is hyper conscious about her health and studiously avoids desserts in an effort to stave off diabetes. But her carefully modulated lifestyle is thrown off track when she meets Liaquat, who's the exact opposite: fearless, unapologetic, and unafraid to break the rules. As Hema tries to help him get his health under control, he begins teaching her how to enjoy the world around her. The pair grow closer, and find themselves facing the aching pull of romance which they'd thought they'd outgrown at their age.
Written by Karim Khan (Brown Boys Swim) and directed by Tara Theatre Artistic Director Natasha Kathi-Chandra, Sweetmeats is a tender, intimate love story - the kind that doesn't often get told, between two South Asian elders told by society that they've aged out of romance. This charming, humorous, and heartwarming new original play explores the loneliness of later years, as well as what it means to let go of your inhibitions and enjoy the indulgences the world has to offer.
