The Importance of Being Oscar in London
Poet, playwright, and author Oscar Wilde was one of the most popular dramatists of his time, known for his wit and social satire, remembered for works such The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest. In The Importance of Being Oscar, Irish writer Michael Mac Liammoir conjures up the vivid and dramatic life of this literary icon in a powerful one man show using excerpts from Wilde's own writing that recreate the biographical highlights of his life.
It was first performed in Dublin in 1960, and has since been revived around the world, thrilling audiences with its bold, unflinching portrait of Oscar Wilde as you've never seen him before: real, raw, and defiant. Funny and fiercely moving, it captures Wilde's rise and fall, his glory and devastation, and was praised as “a beautiful production – intimate and utterly compelling” by Gyles Brandreth. This legendary play is an exhilarating homage to one of the most influential writers of his time. Now it's returning for a limited UK tour ahead of a London run. Directed by Michael Fentiman (Amelie, Jekyll & Hyde, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe), it stars Alastair Whatley in a tour de force central performance.
If you love Oscar Wilde, or even if you're new to his works, you won't want to miss this stirring, intimate tribute that's every bit as clever and witty as he was.
