Tickets are now on sale for The Misanthrope, opening on June 16th 2026 at the National Theatre. Sandra Oh stars as the lead in this razor-sharp staging of Moliere's classic, in which brilliant but prickly novelist Alice rejects the social conventions of kindness and respect in the sycophantic literary and entertainment world she works in. The more she speaks out against fashionable ideas and throws herself behind causes others are afraid of, the more her colleagues avoid her and her personal relationships begin to fall apart. Moliere's dark comedy is a searing exploration of the cost of speaking your mind for a woman and an artist.

National Theatre Director Indhu Rubasingham (The Father and the Assassin) directs Martin Crimp's (Cyrano de Bergerac) cutting new adaptation of this 17th century comedy of manners written by Moliere. Crimp updates the setting to 1990s London and reimagines Moliere's brutal anti-hero, the French aristocrat Alceste, as a woman novelist named Alice, in what's sure to be a thrilling and wickedly funny reimagining that modern audiences can relate to. Alice will be played by the formidable Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy, Killing Eve) in her National Theatre debut. Get ready for razor-sharp wit and an unforgettable protagonist in this clever exploration of private relationships and public debate in a modern context.
