The Rat Trap in London

Noel Coward’s first ever play follows Sheila and Keld, a married couple, both talented and ambitious writers, whose marriage starts to crumple in the wake of professional jealousy and infidelity. Now revised and reimagined by Bill Rosenfield, this play finds a new life at Park Theatre, presented by Troupe.

Why you should see The Rat Trap

  • Noel Coward was one of the UK’s most acclaimed and iconic playwright, actor, and director. Don’t miss the chance to see the very first play he put to paper (at the tender age of eighteen!), given new life and a new space to shine fifty years after his death.
  • Troupe Theatre Company won critical acclaim for its performance of The Forsythe Saga, which The Times described as “sumptuous, panoramic, intense, amusing”. Now the company returns to the wonderfully intimate space of the Park Theatre in Finsbury Park to bring The Rat Trap to the stage.

What is The Rat Trap about?

Belgravia, 1920s: Sheila is a talented novelist and Keld is an aspiring playwright. Both are brilliant and ambitious, and married to each other. But their marriage begins to fall apart when Keld’s career takes off and Sheila’s doesn’t. Sheila is overcome by jealousy, and Keld embarks on an affair, resulting in a darkly witty and dramatic clash of egos.

The Rat Trap was originally written by Noel Coward in 1918, when he was only eighteen years old, and which he called his "first really serious attempt at psychological conflict". Now, over a century later, it is being given a sparkling new revival by Bill Rosenfield.

The Rat Trap opens at Park Theatre on 28th January 2026. Book now to catch this explosive tale about two brilliant, arrogant writers who turn their marriage into a battlefield.

Dated!

Play was written in 2018 by an 18 year old Noël Coward. And unfortunately I think that the playwright's lack of experience of life is apparent in the play. There is no sublety - everything is black or white. To be honest, I think that the play shiuld be retired - it has nothing to say to audiences in 2025. Sorry!
