The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry in London

An ordinary man begins an unexpected journey in this funny, uplifting, and deeply moving musical where the titular Harold Fry decides to walk six hundred miles to say goodbye to an old friend, resulting in a story that will leave you laughing and crying.

Why you should see The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

  • It's based on the best-selling 2012 novel by Rachel Joyce, who returns to help adapt this funny, unique story into a musical. Whether or not you read the book, you'll fall in love with this cast of deeply human and flawed characters.
  • Beloved English actor Mark Addy, best known for Game of Thrones and The Full Monty, takes to the stage to play the unlikely but inspiring hero, Harold Fry.
  • Chart-topping folk indie musician Passenger, best known for his soulful single 'Let Her Go', provides the score for this tear-jerking but joyful musical.

What is The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry about?

Harold Fry is an ordinary man living an ordinary life until he receives a letter from an old friend who's dying in hospice and wants to say goodbye. On a whim, he decides to make the six hundred mile journey from Kingsbridge to Berwick-Upon-Tweed to say goodbye to her… on foot. Along the way he encounters eccentric strangers, unexpected kindness, and confronts memories of a long-buried past. Meanwhile, back home, his wife Maureen goes on her own journey, one that might mend the rift in their marriage.

Adapted by Rachel Joyce from her beloved and best-selling novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is a deeply profound, uplifting musical, simultaneously tragic and funny, full of questions about humanity, redemption, and second chances. Katy Rudd (Ballet Shoes, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) directs Mark Addy, (The Full Monty, The Rig, Game of Thrones) as Harold and Jenna Russell, (Sunday in the Park with George, Hello, Dolly) as Maureen, while chart-topping indie musician Passenger provides a powerful, joyful score.

Fresh off a sold-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry arrives in London for its West End premiere. Don't miss the chance to catch this powerful, moving testament to the human condition that reminds us that it's never too late to start over.

Emotional!

I had read all the books and was intrigued by the play being a musical, although not sure if I would like it or not. There was some beautiful music and some excellent voices. It certainly made me feel emotional. Definitely recommended.

Lovely, touching and funny

I went to see the show after my musical theatre obsessed daughter insisted. I must say, the premise seemed quite boring at first but off we went. How wrong was I! The show is the perfect mix of being touching and humorous. It deals with heavy topics and really makes you reflect on life. We laughed and we cried. It includes the whole demographic of people and is cross generational with wonderful soundtrack. The whole cast were great. Isaac Mullins’ songs were our favourite. Go and see it before it ends its run!

What a show!

Having seen the film when it first came out, I had forgotten some of the details. You also wonder how they could make it a musical. Well they did and it was amazing. It's emotional and some lovely comedy. Wonderful staging, very creative I loved it. Superb acting and dancing from everyone. Mark Addy and Jenna Russell were sublime. Noah Mullins one to watch.

Really enjoyable!

Must say I was sceptical, so many of the modern musicals are rubbishy music - but this was pretty much all great, no tortured can belto - a respected friend had recommended it. The guys' tap dance at the station was a highlight and the balladeer continued to delight. All round uplifting - life is for living.

Thought provoking journey of emotions

This new musical takes the audience on an emotional journey that includes the roller-coaster of loss, purpose, integrity and reconciliation. The staging and lighting are particularly well done. The characters are well acted and the music is memorable. The can’t miss of this production is the puppetry! It was the shared experience of live performance that many will be talking about as they leave the theater.

What a great night

Such a great production. The actors, the set, the music were superb! It's probably one of the best value for money production in the West End right now. I booked my ticket as part of London Theatre Week 3 hours before the performance and couldn't have made a better choice. Just book your tickets whilst it's in town, you won't be disapointed.

Theatre at its best.!

Wow what a show.. there was everything comedy, pathos, emotion, it had the lot in spades. The acting especially from Mark Addy and Jenna Russell was sublime 👌 and the songs & music was most fitting and really helped the storyline along. The staging was brilliant, what seemed simple was so effective, the dog, the car headlights, the sheep, the postboxes I could go on and on.! Amazing show 👏

Fantastic direction of movement, music and use of the stage, scene transformations are rapid, inventive and many, perfect cast, all songs are easy on the ears, many wonderful uplifting; none too long. Excellent balance between story progression, humour, song and emotional depth. We all had a great time (2 parents with a teenage son, which made the finale all the more touching).
