Beautiful - The Carole King Musical in London

Beautiful – An amazing story about a remarkable woman

Directed by Marc Bruni with choreography by Josh Prince, set design by Derek McLane, costumes by Aleja Viettii, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski and sound by Brian Ronan, this unique show features orchestration by Steve Sidwell. While the Broadway production starred Jessie Mueller as Carole King, the British version will be played by a British cast, with full details due to be released nearer the time.

Beautiful – The story

Beautiful tells the fascinating story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, starting off as a member of one of the world's most successful ever chart-topping songwriting team together with her late husband Gerry Goffin. It reveals her relationship with her best friends and fellow songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann and explores her eventual role as one of the most successful pop music solo acts ever.

The show premiered on Broadway in January 2014 and raised the roof, generating a great deal of critical acclaim. Douglas McGrath's popular novel Beautiful inspires the show, which showcases masses of heart-stopping classics written by King, Goffin, Mann and Weil. And the hits just keep on coming, including unforgettable songs like A Natural Woman, You’ve Got a Friend and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. In total the musical contains more than twenty legendary King hits: The Locomotion, Up on the Roof, So Far Away, On Broadway, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, Walking in the Rain, Pleasant Valley Sunday, I Feel the Earth Move and more.

As King herself commented, “A few years ago I went to an early reading of a new musical about my life. Though some scenes about my younger years were very emotional for me, I could tell it was going to be a good show. I didn't go to the opening on Broadway, but when I finally worked up the courage to see it, I loved everything about Beautiful! This show is an honest portrayal of my early life with Gerry Goffin and our friendship with our competitors Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

The musical also launches on a US-wide tour in September 2015. Not many people get to see a Broadway and West End hit about their own lives, proving the popularity of the subject, the songs and the woman herself. Whether you were brought up on King hits or are completely new to them, you'll adore it.

A BRILLIANT NOSTALIC UPLIFTING SHOW

The show was great but I thought the audience did not participate one person complained because the person in front was singing along to the music and I felt like I wanted to get up and dance and sing bu the audience although they liked it they did not participate much and I go to the theatre because it is somewhere where I can participate!!! I think there is too much spectator-ism today with people watching lots of movies etc. However it was brilliant Cassidy jensen who played the role of Carole King was perfect very well cast.. I really liked the Aldwich Theatre cosy and comfortable.

Last chance to catch the Beautiful BEAUTIFUL

by Phil Willmott | Friday, May 26 2017, 13:25

Beautiful - The Carole King Musical I always like to celebrate a show whose primary purpose is to give pleasure and Beautiful which is about to end its time at the Aldwych Theatre after a very respectable run of over two years, is just such a show.

You also learn a lot too. Although I’ve loved songs like So Far Away, Take Good Care of My Baby and Locomotion but I had no idea that the same songwriter was behind them all. That song writer was Carole King and the show takes the form of a gentle autobiography, dramatising scenes from King’s life interspersed with musical numbers she’s written.

Joanna Woodward triumphs as the latest star of BEAUTIFUL

by Phil Willmott | Thursday, September 17 2015, 13:00

Joanna WoodwardI’ve seen the jukebox, biographical musical BEAUTIFUL, about the life and music of Carole King before, both in New York and at London’s Aldwych Theatre and always quite enjoyed it.

Kings essential “niceness” shines through the gentle but uplifting story of her journey from hopeful teen hoping to sell her songs, through the ups and downs, friendships and collaborations of her time writing hits for other people, to starring in her own right at Carnegie Hall after the massive success of her solo album TAPESTRY.
