Beautiful – An amazing story about a remarkable woman

Directed by Marc Bruni with choreography by Josh Prince, set design by Derek McLane, costumes by Aleja Viettii, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski and sound by Brian Ronan, this unique show features orchestration by Steve Sidwell. While the Broadway production starred Jessie Mueller as Carole King, the British version will be played by a British cast, with full details due to be released nearer the time.

Beautiful – The story

Beautiful tells the fascinating story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, starting off as a member of one of the world's most successful ever chart-topping songwriting team together with her late husband Gerry Goffin. It reveals her relationship with her best friends and fellow songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann and explores her eventual role as one of the most successful pop music solo acts ever.

The show premiered on Broadway in January 2014 and raised the roof, generating a great deal of critical acclaim. Douglas McGrath's popular novel Beautiful inspires the show, which showcases masses of heart-stopping classics written by King, Goffin, Mann and Weil. And the hits just keep on coming, including unforgettable songs like A Natural Woman, You’ve Got a Friend and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. In total the musical contains more than twenty legendary King hits: The Locomotion, Up on the Roof, So Far Away, On Broadway, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, Walking in the Rain, Pleasant Valley Sunday, I Feel the Earth Move and more.

As King herself commented, “A few years ago I went to an early reading of a new musical about my life. Though some scenes about my younger years were very emotional for me, I could tell it was going to be a good show. I didn't go to the opening on Broadway, but when I finally worked up the courage to see it, I loved everything about Beautiful! This show is an honest portrayal of my early life with Gerry Goffin and our friendship with our competitors Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

The musical also launches on a US-wide tour in September 2015. Not many people get to see a Broadway and West End hit about their own lives, proving the popularity of the subject, the songs and the woman herself. Whether you were brought up on King hits or are completely new to them, you'll adore it.

A show for music lovers

London Box Office customer

Great fun show

London Box Office customer

Beilliant

Excellent staging and all good songs. Story telling great. Singing a little "off" at times and Carol King has a voice which cannot be mimicked although she did a pretty good job

London Box Office customer

We didn't like it at all

Unfortunately, we didn't like the show at all. As a regular London theatre goers we have expected a much higher standard, that what we have seen. Wooden acting, at most average vocals and a boring story. We left early just 10 minutes into the second half of the show as didn't want to waste more time on that. Positives were discounted tickets, beautiful theatre and comfortable seats.

London Box Office customer

if you remember the music of Carol King a must see

suddenly you remember all the great songs she wrote

London Box Office customer

educational

Didn't know Carole wrote so many hitsongs for others. Knew almost all of them. It was a very pleasant nostalgic journey.

London Box Office customer

fabulous

Loved it, loved it, loved it. The show was brilliant, cast, setting, scenery and music fantastic. The only thing I would say is that the drinks were slightly expensive.

London Box Office customer

Beautiful

There's not a bad part in this show. It was a great musical experience and suitable for anyone. Highly recommended!!

London Box Office customer

If you like her music, go see this

Acting great with great songs and if you're a fan, this is a must see!

London Box Office customer

Absolute must see!

Love love love this production. Great story, can not believe how many well known songs were written by Carole King!

London Box Office customer

Brilliant in every way

London Box Office customer

Seemed to lack a little oomph somehow, for example in some other shows people would be clapping along with music or even dancing in the ails but it didn't happen here!

London Box Office customer

Wonderful!

4th time to see this - different cast but still excellent - if its the only show you see in the West End....................................

London Box Office customer

funny

London Box Office customer

Brilliant

Outstanding, but I love Carole's music. The energy of the actors was awesome especially when you realise that they were doing 2 shows on the day I went on as well as doing it day-after-day, week after week. The lead lady was a super-star. Well done to a great cast; I appreciate their professionalism. Restricted view seats are just that so select carefully. We were in the Grand Circle and the toilet/bar facilities are small. So pre-book interval drinks & move very fast at the break to avoid long queues at the loos! But the theatre staff are very good & helpful-thanks.

You will know all the songs!

I booked these tickets because my dad was in town and it is all the music from his era but I was pleasantly surprised to know so many of the songs! Great performance and great production!

London Box Office customer

Memorable

Would recommend for theatre goers who well remember the times that this wonderful show relates to. Excellent performance by all in particular 'Carole' Originally ordered online tickets and selected Grand Circle-H1 /H2 as I have long legs- bad choice (a) exceptionally steep seating arrangements-(b) limited space between seats in front of you can easily lose balance (as we did ) when standing up to allow others to and from their seats as the Bar/Toilets are on this side of the theatre-(c) limited hand rails when climbing up/down stairs to from bar/toilet to get back to seating. Offered up grade when collecting tickets which made me think hat they knew that my wife and I would not like where we were going to sit.Within 5 minutes of taking our seats we took up the upgrading offer of an additional £15 per seat in the stalls.Perhaps theatre should consider alerting intended purchasers to steep seating arrangements in the Grand Circle.

London Box Office customer

Simply ... Beautiful !

️Fabulous production from beginning to end ...only sad that it didn't last longer ...highly recommended !

London Box Office customer

Must See

The show was excellent from start to finish. Had heard of all the songs I'm sure this is watching so many of the espiodes of the TV drama, Heartbeat. Would go and see this show time and time again. As well as the songs being fab I really loved the story.

London Box Office customer

Beautiful

A light hearted feel good show built around the careers of Carol King and her friends and culminating in her hugely successful Tapestry album. The show is good entertainment for anyone, but is particularly nostalgic for the baby boomers who grew up in the late 50's and 60's and for whom this music was very familiar.

London Box Office customer

Brilliant!

You'll want to sing a long from start to finish, absolutely brilliant show.

London Box Office customer

London Box Office customer

Beautifully Done!!!!!

We sat almost all the way at the top in the back....the seats were fine but i should have splurged a little for lower seats we were sitting kind of high and looking down at the show instead of straight ahead. There are no arm rests and leg room was very limited if u are tall dont sit at the top...But the show was incredible the actors and singers were all wonderful the sound was great i could hear everything..the actors jokes were funny and delivered well i got so into it i seriously cried for Carol! BRAVO

Beautiful in London

Fun, enjoyable and full of popular music. Who knew she was so involved in the music of our lives!?!?! All ages would enjoy the show. Fast moving scenes with lots to look at and listen to!

London Box Office customer

Stunning show

We saw this show on Broadway in New York and wanted to compare USA and UK versions...both are amazing. The theatre in New York was more comfortable and organised...we queued in London to get through the security checks yet in New York we got through the security checks, collected our tickets, got drinks from the bar and were sat in our seats in less than 10 minutes...which were really comfy. A lesson maybe to be learned from New York in getting guests checked in and in their comfy seats...but the show on both sides of the Atlantic was fab.

London Box Office customer

Must see

Fantastic been twice and would go again

London Box Office customer

London Box Office customer

Beginning of pop

Very interesting story about Caroles life, but the show should have been swamped by her music, she was a genius with a mundane personal life.

Happy Memories

It was or 56th wedding anniversary. We managed to move to the back row of the dress circle which took us back to our courting days, where we held hands and remembered all the music from our era. It was a fitting end to a very special day. Thank you.

London Box Office customer

Good night out

The star was excellent and received a standing ovation, all the singers were great in the representation of the stars and groups the period.

Enjoy the show - It was simply Beautiful!

An excellent show and well worth going. We had excellent seats and a very good view. The acting and singing were good and the scenery changes quick, slick and quite fascinating to watch. Well done. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We still don't know if she was actually playing the piano throughout!

London Box Office customer

Fab show!

Loved this show because it has everything - a great storyline, great acting, great music.

A Beautiful life

This is a truly beautiful story. A priveledged version of Just Kids. Sound could do with some work but apart from that it was excellent

London Box Office customer

Great show and theater. My only complaint is that it was hot and stuffy- a bit more air would be great

Fantastic show

This is a truly accurate story of Carol King, such brilliant music and well acted. The Singing was unbelievable

London Box Office customer

A real treat for music lovers

Beautiful is a wonderful show, it tells the story of Carole King's musical ambitions, her rise to playing at Carnegie Hall and all the challenges along the way. However, it's not about Carole in isolation but gives a more rounded picture of her as part of an amazing time in music. The audience is treated to wonderful renditions of her songs as well as a few others that were around at the same time. The standard of performance is extremely high and the staging is clever and keeps your interest throughout. If you are already a fan of Carole King's music you will adore this show, if you don't know her music - go along and be very happily surprised by the wide range of musical genre Carole has given to the music world over the decades. It's a total joy, a real treat and definitely worth making the effort to see.

Singing from the heart

Carol King wrote songs for many other people, primarily Motown and rock performers but she really came into her own when she composed for herself.

London Box Office customer

Musical brilliance

A show crammed with songs you know but didn't realise Carol King had written. A great storyline with fabulous music and sensational performances from all the cast

Joanna Woodward triumphs as the latest star of BEAUTIFUL

17 Sep 2015 in Reviews

Joanna WoodwardI’ve seen the jukebox, biographical musical BEAUTIFUL, about the life and music of Carole King before, both in New York and at London’s Aldwych Theatre and always quite enjoyed it.

Kings essential “niceness” shines through the gentle but uplifting story of her journey from hopeful teen hoping to sell her songs, through the ups and downs, friendships and collaborations of her time writing hits for other people, to starring in her own right at Carnegie Hall after the massive success of her solo album TAPESTRY.

Review of Beautiful The Musical

12 Mar 2015 in Reviews

Beautiful The Musical One of the better jukebox musicals I have seen on the West End, a slightly stronger supporting cast and meatier storyline would be the icing on the cake here.

I have to admit, before this musical I belonged to one of the uncultured masses. Yes, I had heard of Carole King and I knew she was a famous songwriter, but I couldn’t have named any of her songs. I always associated her with the music of the generation above me, one of the names of the past that I knew was well respected but didn’t really know why.

Review of Beautiful - The Carole King Musical

27 Feb 2015 in Reviews

Beautiful - The Carole King Musical The producers of Beautiful have today released over 350,000 new tickets presumably in response to demand since the reviews have come out. It's great news and proof that a hit can come out of a seemingly unpromising idea.

Unpromising because unless you're an expert on twentieth century pop you probably haven’t heard of King. But I’m happy to report that like Jersey Boys (featuring the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) and Thriller Live (drawing on the back catalogue of Michael Jackson) Beautiful is one of those terrific evenings when you suddenly discover how many of your favourite hits are the work of one artist.
