Beautiful – An amazing story about a remarkable woman

Directed by Marc Bruni with choreography by Josh Prince, set design by Derek McLane, costumes by Aleja Viettii, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski and sound by Brian Ronan, this unique show features orchestration by Steve Sidwell. While the Broadway production starred Jessie Mueller as Carole King, the British version will be played by a British cast, with full details due to be released nearer the time.

Beautiful – The story

Beautiful tells the fascinating story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, starting off as a member of one of the world's most successful ever chart-topping songwriting team together with her late husband Gerry Goffin. It reveals her relationship with her best friends and fellow songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann and explores her eventual role as one of the most successful pop music solo acts ever.

The show premiered on Broadway in January 2014 and raised the roof, generating a great deal of critical acclaim. Douglas McGrath's popular novel Beautiful inspires the show, which showcases masses of heart-stopping classics written by King, Goffin, Mann and Weil. And the hits just keep on coming, including unforgettable songs like A Natural Woman, You’ve Got a Friend and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. In total the musical contains more than twenty legendary King hits: The Locomotion, Up on the Roof, So Far Away, On Broadway, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, Walking in the Rain, Pleasant Valley Sunday, I Feel the Earth Move and more.

As King herself commented, “A few years ago I went to an early reading of a new musical about my life. Though some scenes about my younger years were very emotional for me, I could tell it was going to be a good show. I didn't go to the opening on Broadway, but when I finally worked up the courage to see it, I loved everything about Beautiful! This show is an honest portrayal of my early life with Gerry Goffin and our friendship with our competitors Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

The musical also launches on a US-wide tour in September 2015. Not many people get to see a Broadway and West End hit about their own lives, proving the popularity of the subject, the songs and the woman herself. Whether you were brought up on King hits or are completely new to them, you'll adore it.

An excellent evenings entertainment

This production has only a little more than a month to run so a detailed review at this stage would seem pretty pointless. However we thoroughly enjoyed "Beautiful" especially of course the music almost all of which we were entirely familiar with and the Carole King story some of which was unknown to us previously.

Beautiful Music, Beautiful Cast, Beautiful Show!

The songs were the reason I went to see the show and I wasn't disappointed. Added to that was a poignant storyline linking them which added to the enjoyment of the show. The cast were excellent and it was altogether one of the most enjoyable shows I have seen on the London stage.

Must see Musical

I was initially not enthusiastic about seeing Beautiful. A friend took my husband when he was in London in February and he loved it. I took my daughter also reluctant on my husbands recommendation, and we both loved the performance. Found it really interesting how much song writing Carol King had done. Love the story and would see it again. Thank you

Awesome - a must see!!

This was a fabulous musical and drama all wrapped into one. At times you will be wanting to sing along (but not out loud of course), tapping your feet, laughing and at times a few tears as you learn about Carol Kings life and the many songs she and her husband wrote together!! Music from the Drifters and many more groups. Great singing and acting and dancing!!

If Only You Knew

Though I'm not a musical fan, I was very impressed and entertained during this show. This was a last-minute addition to our day, and we were pleasantly surprised by the music, acting and overall entertainment experience. Seating was a bit uncomfortable, but I found myself enthralled with the story and music, thus forgot my discomfort. We would highly recommend this to anyone wavering whether to go see it.

Great music

A really lovely show, music was so good and a good story which was easy to follow. A lovely theatre, however half way through the first half someone in the row in front of us started filming the show when the usher came rushing along our row standing on people's feet and falling into us he made such a commotion and it was a wonder he didn't fall into the row she was sat in.

A BRILLIANT NOSTALIC UPLIFTING SHOW

The show was great but I thought the audience did not participate one person complained because the person in front was singing along to the music and I felt like I wanted to get up and dance and sing bu the audience although they liked it they did not participate much and I go to the theatre because it is somewhere where I can participate!!! I think there is too much spectator-ism today with people watching lots of movies etc. However it was brilliant Cassidy jensen who played the role of Carole King was perfect very well cast.. I really liked the Aldwich Theatre cosy and comfortable.

A feel good, joyful experience for all!

Unsure of whether the story of Carole King would be enough to form the basis of a great musical we were cautious about this show. However, we were stunned by the fantastic show we were treated to. The quality of the singing and acting was out of this world- a true feel-good event that left us with a buzz and a smile on our faces! The only slight down side was not the show itself but our selection of seats. In sitting in the Grand Circle we were unable to see all the cast due to the set design- there were points when the cast were elevated and we lost sight of them completely even though they were singing! Also, as my partner is over six foot he found the tight space in the rows uncomfortable to say the least- numb legs eventually set in!

Last chance to catch the Beautiful BEAUTIFUL

26 May 2017 in News

Beautiful - The Carole King Musical I always like to celebrate a show whose primary purpose is to give pleasure and Beautiful which is about to end its time at the Aldwych Theatre after a very respectable run of over two years, is just such a show.

You also learn a lot too. Although I’ve loved songs like So Far Away, Take Good Care of My Baby and Locomotion but I had no idea that the same songwriter was behind them all. That song writer was Carole King and the show takes the form of a gentle autobiography, dramatising scenes from King’s life interspersed with musical numbers she’s written.

Joanna Woodward triumphs as the latest star of BEAUTIFUL

17 Sep 2015 in Reviews

Joanna WoodwardI’ve seen the jukebox, biographical musical BEAUTIFUL, about the life and music of Carole King before, both in New York and at London’s Aldwych Theatre and always quite enjoyed it.

Kings essential “niceness” shines through the gentle but uplifting story of her journey from hopeful teen hoping to sell her songs, through the ups and downs, friendships and collaborations of her time writing hits for other people, to starring in her own right at Carnegie Hall after the massive success of her solo album TAPESTRY.

Olivier Awards This weekend was one of the pivotal awards weekends in the theatre calendar, with the stars of the West End hitting the red carpet to celebrate the best of theatre, dance and opera that London had to offer. The 39th Lawrence Olivier Awards took place on Sunday 12th April at the Royal Opera House and as ever there were some expected wins for the year’s most popular productions but also some surprises as well deserved dark horses crept up unawares.

Review of Beautiful The Musical

12 Mar 2015 in Reviews

Beautiful The Musical One of the better jukebox musicals I have seen on the West End, a slightly stronger supporting cast and meatier storyline would be the icing on the cake here.

I have to admit, before this musical I belonged to one of the uncultured masses. Yes, I had heard of Carole King and I knew she was a famous songwriter, but I couldn’t have named any of her songs. I always associated her with the music of the generation above me, one of the names of the past that I knew was well respected but didn’t really know why.

Review of Beautiful - The Carole King Musical

27 Feb 2015 in Reviews

Beautiful - The Carole King Musical The producers of Beautiful have today released over 350,000 new tickets presumably in response to demand since the reviews have come out. It's great news and proof that a hit can come out of a seemingly unpromising idea.

Unpromising because unless you're an expert on twentieth century pop you probably haven’t heard of King. But I’m happy to report that like Jersey Boys (featuring the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) and Thriller Live (drawing on the back catalogue of Michael Jackson) Beautiful is one of those terrific evenings when you suddenly discover how many of your favourite hits are the work of one artist.
