Blithe Spirit description

Blithe Spirit – Very bright, very funny and pin-sharp

We’re pleased to welcome the redoubtable Dame Angela Lansbury, back on the London stage for the first time in forty years at 88 years of age. Weirdly, Lansbury returns to the same stage her mother Moyna Macgill debuted on way back in 1918 when the Gielgud was called The Globe. She’s here as the star of Noel Coward’s classic comedy of manners, Blithe Spirit, playing a limited run from March to June 2014 at the Gielgud Theatre.

Angela Lansbury was born in Poplar in east London but moved to the USA during the Second World War. In 1943 she signed a contact with MGM, beginning an illustrious career on stage, silver screen and television. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her 1944 debut film, Gaslight. She is probably best known and loved for her TV role as Jessica Fletcher, the writer and amateur detective in Murder, She Wrote, which ran for twelve years until 1996.

Blithe Spirit - The story

Charles Condomine is planning to write a novel. He wants to experience a spiritualist meeting in person as part of his research, so he and his second wife Ruth invite their friends the Bradmans to their home for dinner and a séance, held by the eccentric clairvoyant Madame Arcati.

Everyone is sure Madame Arcati is a fake until she manages to summon the spirit of Charles’ first wife Elvira. The jealous ghost hangs around for days, visible only to Charles, causing a growing rift between him and his new wife. The wives eventually engage in a vicious feud over who will have Charles, challenging their very existence as well as his life. Who will win? Who lives and who dies? The ending is a real surprise.

It’s sharp and clever, witty and extremely funny, packed with Coward’s masterful wordplay and wicked humour. If you love a good giggle and enjoy pure theatrical class, you’ll adore this new production of an old and well-loved favourite. Watch out for the line that was considered too risqué for US audiences when the movie was released: "If you're trying to compile an inventory of my sex life, I feel it only fair to warn you that you've omitted several episodes. I shall consult my diary and give you a complete list after lunch." Wonderful!

Five time Tony Award winner Lansbury teams up with the respected director Michael Blakemore once again to repeat her Tony Award-winning 2009 role as Madame Arcati. This one is absolutely perfect for anyone who likes their comedy acerbic, intelligent and typically British.

A Theatre goer from afar

We come to London seldom, living in the Midlands. The show was fine nothing outstanding. We came to see Angela Lansbury and were not disappointed, although I did prefer Margaret Rutherford. Old Theatre, very modern in Leicester for half the price

A special night

Loved every minute of the show. Beautiful old theatre , magnificent sets, super acting, in fact it didn't feel like acting it was so natural one felt as though sitting in their lounge. Fantastic dialogue, timing of all actors and all the small gestures were superb. The final scene just cracked me up . Never laughed at a show so much. Angela Landsbury was a stand out.

Spoilt by sound

This show was spoilt by the lack of sound. I did not hear a word that the actors said but was following the written 'autocue' all evening so I could not watch the actors at the same time. The sound production was very bad as there did not appear to be any microphones on stage and the 'autocue' did not keep up with what was being said. I know my husband & I were in the Grand Circle (and we are in our 70's) but we have never experienced such poor quality sound and it really spoilt the evening.

Sublime Spirit

Totally awesome - fabulous writing by Coward was to be expected, as was exquisite stagecraft by Ms Lansbury, but all the cast played difficult roles brilliantly. Look out particularly for Ms Rooper's initial interaction with the new ghost on the block, and savour every second of Charles' final 'conversation' with the set!Could watch it again and againSublime

Lansbury brilliant - rest Amateur Dramatics ... and Edith!?????

Massively disappointed! Angela Lansbury was wonderful and without her - it would have been a village hall production that was just all a bit painful to watch with lines being fluffed left, right and centre and wooden performances.

Blithe Spirit

Angela Landsbury was remarkable, all the more so for the energy and sharpness at the grand age of 88.The play itself is no masterpiece but a good story with comedy. The other cast members were all accomplished actors, the direction was good. It was enjoyable.

Dame Angela Lansbury heads up a great cast.

I loved this show. Noel Coward's writing is entertaining and funny. All of the cast is incredible, but Angela Lansbury proves that she's still got it... and some. Not many "bad" places to sit, but I was centered towards the back in the stalls and the view was perfect.

Polished classic hits bullseye...

Coward's play remains remarkably fresh when performed as beautifully as this. . of course Angela Lansbury does not disappoint, with a glorious performance as Mme Arcati, but she does not eclipse a very strong cast who play Coward's clever lok at spiritualism and fractured marriages to the hilt. Wonderful fun. !
