Blithe Spirit in London
Starring:
Jennifer Saunders
Blithe Spirit – Noel Coward's classic comedy is back in town!
Welcome to Blithe spirit, starring Jennifer Saunders, half of the comedy duo French and Saunders, for which she and Dawn French received a BAFTA fellowship in 2009. Saunders also wrote and starred in Absolutely Fabulous. The award-winning actor delights us yet again in her role as the eccentric Medium Madame Arcati along with Geoffrey Streatfeild, Lisa Dillon, Simon Coates, Lucy Robinson, and Rose Wardlaw. The fun is directed by Sir Richard Eyre, complete with an all-star cast and a legendary creative team.
What's the plot of Blithe Spirit?
Blithe Spirit was written by Noel Coward in 1941, while war roared across Europe and beyond. It was named after a line from the poem 'To a Skylark' by Percy Bysshe Shelley: “Hail to thee, blithe Spirit! Bird thou never wert.” There was a movie version in 1945, narrated by Coward and directed by David Lean. It was a huge hit, just like the play, and the story has been told numerous times in theatres across the world ever since. It remains hugely popular and always fills venues to the brim.
The plot? Author Charles Condomine is researching material for a mystery novel. He invites the awful fake Medium Madame Arcati to hold a séance in his home. While in a trance Madame Arcati accidentally summons the ghost of Charles’ first wife, Elvira, who only Charles can see. Elvira clearly wants her husband back despite his new wife Ruth. Things go rapidly downhill as a baffled Charles watches his dead wife and his living wife fight over him. Who will win? It's a brilliant ending!
Like all of Coward's plays Blithe Spirit is rich in beautifully crafted dialogue, perfectly observed, wonderfully sophisticated and, as always, hilariously funny and totally outrageous. Anthony Ward is the designer and Howard Harrison is the two-time Olivier winning lighting designer. John Leonard is the award-winning sound designer and Paul Kieve, the internationally renowned illusionist, creates the magic. Last but not least, Blithe Spirit is presented by Theatre Royal Bath Productions, Lee Dean, and Jonathan Church Theatre Productions.
Who is Blithe Spirit for?
Blithe Spirit is recommended for people aged 12 or more.

A great play but as we are older the only seats available were not the best. Worth booking earlier and buying better seats.

Perfect adaptation of Noel Cowards play ! No scenery changes so very quick turnaround in acts ! I did however feel that “Edith” overacted a teeny tiny little bit! But perhaps this was the director’s intention. A great night out!

Loved every minute of the show. Beautiful old theatre , magnificent sets, super acting, in fact it didn't feel like acting it was so natural one felt as though sitting in their lounge. Fantastic dialogue, timing of all actors and all the small gestures were superb. The final scene just cracked me up . Never laughed at a show so much. Angela Landsbury was a stand out.

This show was spoilt by the lack of sound. I did not hear a word that the actors said but was following the written 'autocue' all evening so I could not watch the actors at the same time. The sound production was very bad as there did not appear to be any microphones on stage and the 'autocue' did not keep up with what was being said. I know my husband & I were in the Grand Circle (and we are in our 70's) but we have never experienced such poor quality sound and it really spoilt the evening.

Totally awesome - fabulous writing by Coward was to be expected, as was exquisite stagecraft by Ms Lansbury, but all the cast played difficult roles brilliantly. Look out particularly for Ms Rooper's initial interaction with the new ghost on the block, and savour every second of Charles' final 'conversation' with the set! Could watch it again and again Sublime

Massively disappointed! Angela Lansbury was wonderful and without her - it would have been a village hall production that was just all a bit painful to watch with lines being fluffed left, right and centre and wooden performances.

Angela Landsbury was remarkable, all the more so for the energy and sharpness at the grand age of 88. The play itself is no masterpiece but a good story with comedy. The other cast members were all accomplished actors, the direction was good. It was enjoyable.

Coward's play remains remarkably fresh when performed as beautifully as this. . of course Angela Lansbury does not disappoint, with a glorious performance as Mme Arcati, but she does not eclipse a very strong cast who play Coward's clever lok at spiritualism and fractured marriages to the hilt. Wonderful fun. !

Update for Blithe Spirit at the Harold Pinter Theatre
Imagine how the infamously brilliant Noel Coward would feel if he knew so many of his remarkable plays were still on stage, still loved by millions all these years after his death? This one, written in 1941, remains one of his best-loved, a hilarious and hysterical play that delves deep into the bizarre world where an angry ghost, an eccentric medium, and the sabotage of a perfectly good marriage are laid out to entertain us.
