If you were lucky enough to catch the original 1981 musical or the 2006 film, you'll be raring to go. Dreamgirls is back on stage and it's a fresh new version designed to delight. The star of the show this time around is Glee's Amber Riley, a songstress to reckon with and a diva with a truly massive voice.

Amber Riley has played the role of the remarkable soul diva Mercedes Jones through six seasons of Glee, the hit TV show, and by all accounts she won the central role of Effie with ease.

Rather than stick to the original, producer Sonia Friedman has completely re imagined the story to give it a boost worthy of the 21st century. It's just as powerful now as it was back then. The music is a legend too, courtesy of Henry Krieger, and the lyrics and book are by Tom Eyen.

The story explores the life and times of the Dreams, a young female singing trio, and their rise to super-stardom in the glittering 1960s. Apparently the award-winning Friedman has acquired the rights for a full West End production of the show, and Casey Nicholaw – who directed The Book of Mormon and Aladdin – is tipped to direct.

The details are fairly sketchy right now but we'll know the full story by March 2016. The show's actually set to hit the stage in late 2016.

The new production has caused an international stir, with newspapers all over the world – including the Indian Express – reporting on Amber Riley's involvement. It just goes to show what an enduringly popular and inspirational story it is.

Dream Girls – The story

It's 1960s Detroit. A talented girl soul band, the Dreams, is about to go for gold. If that sounds familiar, it's loosely based on the amazing tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes. This is an iconic musical tracing the lives and loves of the band and the people they encounter, remarkably convincing and studded with beautiful soul music.

What does Amber Riley say? Her pleasure is clear. She's very excited indeed. In her words, “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special!”

Dreamgirls previews at the Savoy Theatre in November, and opens officially the following month. If you only see one musical this year, it's worth waiting for this one!

Must seen musical, Awful experience with a member of staff!!

Over all the show was fantastic, the story line at time was fast to keep up with, the singers was flawless. Unfortunately awful experience with a member of staff. With it being a musical my understanding the audience was allowed to sing along with the show, this wasn't the case, staff member asked could stop singing along with the show, I asked why, he said 4 people complained that others couldn't hear the music, the gentlemen beside me said the staff member was out of order the way he spoken to us and our singing was acceptable and wasn't out of order, At the time my friends wanted to leave due to this experience I told my friends to remain seated, in hindsight we should of left at the time, the I whole situation made us uncomfortable and spoiled our night. I am sure never to return to the The Savoy Theatre again. Thanks!!

A delightful experience

The music and entertainment was really good. The singers delivery of the well known songs from the movie and song by world acclaimed musicians/ singing artists, were remarkable. The best seating in the Savoy theatre for the Dreamgirls show, were in the middle on the Grand Circle and the Dress Circle due to the stage being slightly high. Also, easily accessible to the bar, toilets and so on.

Disappointing

The female lead (Effie) & the male lead (Jimmy) were very good. The songs were very poor especially the lyrics. Story line was awful. The orchestra/band were very good.

Amber Riley makes it

The magical singing voices will give you goosebumps. The intimate setting ensures a fantastic evening. As expected Amber Riley is phenomenal but she is supported by an excellent cast. Throughly recommended.

Amber steals the show

I cannot take it away from the tremendous cast, but I cant help but think that if Amber Riley was not the lead I would not have enjoyed the show quite so much. Ambers singing touched my heart and bought me close to tears on more than one occasion - she was brilliant.

London Box Office customer

Creatives

Everything was awesome

London Box Office customer

Fantastic!

This show was absolutely amazing! I took a friend who has never watched the film and she understood everything what was going on which is really hard in some musicals! Absolutely fabulous!

London Box Office customer

Amazing - Amber Riley was utterly fabulous!

This show was musical theatre at its best - loud, sparkling and emotional! Yes the story isn't new - its a loose tale of an American Girl Band trying to breakthrough, but it is done exceptionally well and all the cast were brilliant, the dancing, the costumes and the powerful songs were incredible. Amber Riley was truly fabulous - her voice was so powerful. Her co stars had exceptional voices too. It is loud but I could hear clearly form a seat in the middle of the dress circle, it wasn't too loud and the audience last night gave several standing ovations - even mid show!! Don't listen to the haters give it a go!

London Box Office customer

Must see

Would defo go again!

London Box Office customer

Great singing and very sparkly!

London Box Office customer

London Box Office customer

Unforgetable

London Box Office customer

Incredible beyind words

The stand in for amber riley was absolutely incredible. Never have i seen 2 standing ovations during one song in all the musicals i have seen. Three very talented ladies lead last nights performance and blew me away!

London Box Office customer

Breath taking

London Box Office customer

Amazing

I really liked the film and wanted to see Amber Riley, she wasn't playing Effie but MARISHA WALLACE was amazing. 3 standing ovations and she made me cry. Please support this show, it is worth every penny!!

London Box Office customer

Simply Outstanding Show

London Box Office customer

Outstanding

Saw the original on Broadway in NYC - 35 years ago - this was even more spectacular --- a must see for anyone coming to London

London Box Office customer

Wonderful

London Box Office customer

A must see for any Musical fan

Fabulous singing throughout . Not a duff note or song. Costumes were top notch and snazzy lighting which really enhanced the performance. Some big West End stars in the making .

London Box Office customer

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

Please go and see this show, you wont be disappointed. The whole cast have incredible voices and the dances are fabulous. The scenery at first seems simple, but it is oh so effective and really creates the setting. Amber Riley was indisposed the night I went and sadly i didnt get the name of her understudy for 08/03, but she was totally and utterly spell-bindingly good. I cried at the end of the first act - it was so powerful and emotional. Just go and see for yourself.....

Review: DREAMGIRLS at The Savoy Theatre

11 Jan 2017 in Reviews

dreamgirls-production-shot.jpg DREAMGIRLS, charting the rise to success of a 1960's Supremes-style girl group 'The Dreams', crackles along at a lively pace with plenty of soul, sass and colour.

Against the backdrop of America's post-civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's, we follow the girls from slightly awkward teen hopefuls, 'The Dreamettes', through the trials and tribulations of showbiz to become the hugely successful 'Dreams'.

Who will be your Dream Girl?

17 May 2016 in Casts

Dreamgirls There’s only six months to go until the BIG musical of 2016 opens at the Savoy Theatre. It’s DREAM GIRLS of course and the producers have announced a new tidbit of information to keep us intrigued.

It’s already been reported that Amber Riley will only play the lead role for seven performances a week. This isn't unusual when a part is exhausting to sing. The artist’s vocal chords just can’t take the gruelling schedule and if you go to a matinee or Monday night show in the West End and on Broadway you’ll often see the cover, what used to be called the understudy, standing in for the star.

Could Dreamgirls be coming to the West End?

14 Mar 2015 in News

Dreamgirls LondonThe word on the theatrical grapevine is that prolific producer Sonia Friedman has battled off tough competition to secure the rights to the iconic Broadway musical Dreamgirls, and has her sights on a big West End opening.

Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway back in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre to a rapturous reception. The production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards including for Best Musical, and won six. The show was revived again on Broadway in 1987, but it has never ventured over to the West End.
