If you were lucky enough to catch the original 1981 musical or the 2006 film, you'll be raring to go. Dreamgirls is back on stage and it's a fresh new version designed to delight. The star of the show this time around is Glee's Amber Riley, a songstress to reckon with and a diva with a truly massive voice.

Amber Riley has played the role of the remarkable soul diva Mercedes Jones through six seasons of Glee, the hit TV show, and by all accounts she won the central role of Effie with ease.

Rather than stick to the original, producer Sonia Friedman has completely re imagined the story to give it a boost worthy of the 21st century. It's just as powerful now as it was back then. The music is a legend too, courtesy of Henry Krieger, and the lyrics and book are by Tom Eyen.

The story explores the life and times of the Dreams, a young female singing trio, and their rise to super-stardom in the glittering 1960s. Apparently the award-winning Friedman has acquired the rights for a full West End production of the show, and Casey Nicholaw – who directed The Book of Mormon and Aladdin – is tipped to direct.

The details are fairly sketchy right now but we'll know the full story by March 2016. The show's actually set to hit the stage in late 2016.

The new production has caused an international stir, with newspapers all over the world – including the Indian Express – reporting on Amber Riley's involvement. It just goes to show what an enduringly popular and inspirational story it is.

Dream Girls – The story

It's 1960s Detroit. A talented girl soul band, the Dreams, is about to go for gold. If that sounds familiar, it's loosely based on the amazing tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes. This is an iconic musical tracing the lives and loves of the band and the people they encounter, remarkably convincing and studded with beautiful soul music.

What does Amber Riley say? Her pleasure is clear. She's very excited indeed. In her words, “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special!”

Dreamgirls previews at the Savoy Theatre in November, and opens officially the following month. If you only see one musical this year, it's worth waiting for this one!

BEST EVER

I bought two tickets for my niece's 18th birthday present, as she really wanted to see the show. She was beyond words and very excited to go and see the show, she took her mother with her and they both said it was the best show they have seen. The singing was fantastic, the acting and atmosphere was brilliant. They had a fantastic time and they both said they would see it again. Only let down was the price of drinks at the interval £27 for 2 wines / or £70 for a bottle of prosecco, that is outrageous.

London Box Office customer

Emotional and uplifting with glitter and glamour x

London Box Office customer

The lyrics to the songs were terrible - so repetititive

My friends and I found the show very boring. There was no real plot line and you couldn't often hear what the actors were singing - when you could hear the lyrics, they just kept repeating the same line over and over again. Very poorly written. I would not bother going to see this show - you will be disappointed.

London Box Office customer

London Box Office customer

Powerful intense

Beautiful impressive show, enjoyed very much, good songs choices and very powerful beautiful voices , a little too loud and intense, but definitely worth seeing it, credit to an actors really hard workers.

London Box Office customer

Fun and up,ifting

I loved the show but was saddened by the lack of etiquette of the people sitting around me, since when has it been good manners to eat sweets so that the entire theatre can hear you, Delve into boxes of popcorn and haribo type sweets and make even more noise. My son in law and best friend have decided to not attend the theatre anymore as the performance are invariably spoilt by theatre goers with no etiquette.

London Box Office customer

Must see

The show was fab.. I sat in a good seat. All the dancers and singers were good, the bigger lady was soooo good and funny. This show tickes all the boxes. So glad I booked on line in Australia. All the staff were very helpful. A happy afternoon for Susan from Australia

London Box Office customer

It leaves you breathless

London Box Office customer

Brilliant, enjoyable and very happy show ... a real must see!

Overall very satisfied with the show, the venue location, the wardrobe and top performances. If you are taking someone in a wheelchair it is rather difficult to access the "wheelchair access" into the theater as you have to go around (approx 10 minute walk) and the ways is a steep descent.

London Box Office customer

Very loud screechy could not always understand

Too loud not much of a story much better shows to see came out at half time

London Box Office customer

Amazing voices with gorgeous costumes!

London Box Office customer

A real must see, great story and songs!

We felt the first half of the show was run through quite quickly and that some if the singers were drowned out by the band so you couldn’t hear them, we you could they were excellent!! Would still recommend though.

London Box Office customer

Must see, soulful

London Box Office customer

Amazing, performance, great atmosphere

London Box Office customer

Great show

Story was easy to follow and music really enjoyable. Singers were exceptional!

London Box Office customer

Jaw dropping, spine tingling, like nothing I have seen before. This show is all about the vocals and all I can say is wow!

In 50 years I don’t think I have ever experienced the power of the human voice like this. A standing ovation in the middle of the show and unstoppable tears that came from the shere emotion in those voices.

London Box Office customer

Great Performance ! Heart felt!

Dreamgirls was just that a dream. The singers are all great, the story line played beautiful! Overrall 5 stars for me!

London Box Office customer

Rubbish

The singing was shouty the sound was tremble

London Box Office customer

Sparkly dream

A fantastic show. Loved the costumes especially the glitter and sparkle. I walk with a rollator, and the young member of staff ( he was 18) who saw me to my seat was very attentive, and really looked after me. The system of ordering and receiving drinks and snacks at our seats worked really well. Although perhaps a little pricey. The young guy who assisted me also explained that they like people to leave their rubbish in the bags that the snacks arrived in as when collected they are sorted out and recycled.

London Box Office customer

Fabulous

This show did not disappoint acting singing by everyone first class - costumes amazing - would say to anyone go and see this

London Box Office customer

Dazzling,

My seats were in the grand circle very please with my seat and the view

London Box Office customer

Two hours of screaming songs

What an aweful show. The music was boring, “the singing” was screaming every note. The show is way over amplified- we left at intermission after enduring that godaweful song that was screamed for a full ten mjnutes. I truly wish I had my money and my afternoon back.

London Box Office customer

Beyond outstanding

This show is up there with the best ! Vocally I have never been blown away as much by any other show, it is just unheard of. it will make you shiver ! It's an emotional feel good show. The Actors are mind blowing, the costumes and set beautiful and original and, man, that music will make you want to dance and cry all night ! This show deserves 6 stars. go see it before it leaves !! those girls will make you dream !! Leading ladies Brennyn Lark, Marisha Wallace and Asmeret Ghebremichael definitely have a bright future ahead :)

London Box Office customer

Screechy

I have been to a lot of West End shows over the years and this has to be the worst that I have ever been to. The singing was more like shouting and screeching.

London Box Office customer

I'm not one for the theatre - but booked to go with my sisters for my mums bday! I've never been so engaged in a production and felt so many emotions as I did watching dreamgirls! Honestly a must must must see! Loved every second! Effie's voice will blow you away - A VERY TALENTED CAST!!

London Box Office customer

London Box Office customer

Amazing

London Box Office customer

Must see!

London Box Office customer

Excellent musical

Highly recommend this musical, brilliant vocals and highly enjoyable

London Box Office customer

Spectacular voices- stunning costumes

The ability of the performers and sheer energy of the performance was stunning. The music, rather than catchy show tunes, conveyed a depth of emotion and those emotions felt very real. It was great to see so many strong female performers together

London Box Office customer

Stunning vocals

Wow - amazing show - the big number just before the interval is emotionally charged those vocals were something else

London Box Office customer

Effie was amazing 😉

Dreamgirls was amazing, it follows the story fully. I would advise to watch the film first to get the full power of the show. Effie was outstanding. My daughter and I loved every minute and would happily watch it again

London Box Office customer

Dancing could have been better singing brilliant and acting was ok

London Box Office customer

Must See!

Great music

London Box Office customer

Loved it!

Exceptionally talent bunch of actors. Some of the singing was very emotional - brought a tear to my eye when Effie sang her song after being dumped by the group. I really loved this show. Great 60’s music

London Box Office customer

Other than the couple of lovely duets the music was much too loud. I have seen over 75 musicals and have never had to plug my ears to understand the lyrics. It should not be a rock concert. The sound technician needs to turn off the mics because the actors’ voices don’t need the amplification. Very disappointing.

London Box Office customer

Outstanding

Gives you goosebumps. The singing is tremendous!!! A must see.

Dreamgirls sets closing date in the West End

12 Jun 2018

Dreamgirls Hurry! If you haven't seen the glorious DREAMGIRLS in the West End you only have until January 12th when it closes in the West End ahead of a national tour.

It's one of the best loved musicals of the past 50 years, a reputation cemented by a terrific movie and the rave reviews of both critics and audiences who have seen it at the Savoy Theatre.

Review: DREAMGIRLS at The Savoy Theatre

11 Jan 2017

dreamgirls-production-shot.jpg DREAMGIRLS, charting the rise to success of a 1960's Supremes-style girl group 'The Dreams', crackles along at a lively pace with plenty of soul, sass and colour.

Against the backdrop of America's post-civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's, we follow the girls from slightly awkward teen hopefuls, 'The Dreamettes', through the trials and tribulations of showbiz to become the hugely successful 'Dreams'.

Who will be your Dream Girl?

17 May 2016

Dreamgirls There’s only six months to go until the BIG musical of 2016 opens at the Savoy Theatre. It’s DREAM GIRLS of course and the producers have announced a new tidbit of information to keep us intrigued.

It’s already been reported that Amber Riley will only play the lead role for seven performances a week. This isn't unusual when a part is exhausting to sing. The artist’s vocal chords just can’t take the gruelling schedule and if you go to a matinee or Monday night show in the West End and on Broadway you’ll often see the cover, what used to be called the understudy, standing in for the star.

Snap up your Dreamgirls tickets! This is going to sell out!

04 Apr 2016

Dreamgirls It’s been a long wait!

Thirty-five years after its ground-breaking original Broadway production the West End will finally get its own production of Tony Award-winning musical DREAMGIRLS when it opens at the Savoy Theatre in November, 2016.

Could Dreamgirls be coming to the West End?

14 Mar 2015

Dreamgirls LondonThe word on the theatrical grapevine is that prolific producer Sonia Friedman has battled off tough competition to secure the rights to the iconic Broadway musical Dreamgirls, and has her sights on a big West End opening.

Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway back in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre to a rapturous reception. The production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards including for Best Musical, and won six. The show was revived again on Broadway in 1987, but it has never ventured over to the West End.
