If you were lucky enough to catch the original 1981 musical or the 2006 film, you'll be raring to go. Dreamgirls is back on stage and it's a fresh new version designed to delight. The star of the show this time around is Glee's Amber Riley, a songstress to reckon with and a diva with a truly massive voice.
Amber Riley has played the role of the remarkable soul diva Mercedes Jones through six seasons of Glee, the hit TV show, and by all accounts she won the central role of Effie with ease.
Rather than stick to the original, producer Sonia Friedman has completely re imagined the story to give it a boost worthy of the 21st century. It's just as powerful now as it was back then. The music is a legend too, courtesy of Henry Krieger, and the lyrics and book are by Tom Eyen.
The story explores the life and times of the Dreams, a young female singing trio, and their rise to super-stardom in the glittering 1960s. Apparently the award-winning Friedman has acquired the rights for a full West End production of the show, and Casey Nicholaw – who directed The Book of Mormon and Aladdin – is tipped to direct.
The details are fairly sketchy right now but we'll know the full story by March 2016. The show's actually set to hit the stage in late 2016.
The new production has caused an international stir, with newspapers all over the world – including the Indian Express – reporting on Amber Riley's involvement. It just goes to show what an enduringly popular and inspirational story it is.
Dream Girls – The story
It's 1960s Detroit. A talented girl soul band, the Dreams, is about to go for gold. If that sounds familiar, it's loosely based on the amazing tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes. This is an iconic musical tracing the lives and loves of the band and the people they encounter, remarkably convincing and studded with beautiful soul music.
What does Amber Riley say? Her pleasure is clear. She's very excited indeed. In her words, “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special!”
Dreamgirls previews at the Savoy Theatre in November, and opens officially the following month. If you only see one musical this year, it's worth waiting for this one!

I thought it would have had a few more well known songs in it The first half was quite boring and the story drawn out - found a lot of the male dance section boring and the story line quite repetitive Second half was much better

We liked this show very much because the music was very well written, the actors interacted with the audience, and the acting was at a very high level. In the end it leaves you with great memories and lifted spirits. I highly recommend it to people that want to laugh and feel connected with the actors.

What a shame the first half hurt our ears due to poor volume management
Fabulous show completely let down by their technical team. The music and microphones were so loud in the first half you couldn't hear the words, it sounded like the performers were screaming and during group songs it literally hurt your ears. After the interval it seemed to have been corrected but such a shame of the first 1.5 hour of the show... plus the money we spend

Brilliant lead singing set the show apart
The storyline to the show wasn't what l expected at all as before l went l assumed it was about The Supremes - don't know where that came from other than supposition about what the storyline was about. It was musically brilliant with the female lead absolutely outstanding. She sang her heart out and made the show for me. It was a fantastic performance.

I had high expectations on this show, but the acting could be better. The songs are beautiful, the singer were great, but the performance was not involving.

Outstanding singing, great music and show!
The show was awesome. The quality of the singers is optimal, they create good rapport and transmit emotion and messages via their voices very effectively. The costumes are modern, colorful and look elegant. I would say that all the performances were great. Both main actresses, Dina and the other lady sang beautifully. Two thumbs up! We loved the show! The men all sang wonderfully as well. A must see!

...and you, and you, and you.....you're gonna love me
This is a super show - glamour, glitz, and a storyline anyone that goes to see it is probably familiar with. Voices to take your breath away. I just wish that theatre goers would respect the enjoyment of others and refrain from a very audible running commentary, or constant tapping out of the beat of some of the songs on a tub of Pringles!!! Or turning up late, but having had time to get a drink from the bar. So, so rude.

Me and my husband went to see dreamgirls last night. Must admit it did take me a while to get into it but once I did I really enjoyed it. 2nd half I was engrossed! Fab storyline, singing was amazing and the costumes and set were beautiful. We sat in the dress circle, row L seats 3 & 4 which were sold as restricted view. But other than not seeing the very very top of the set the seats had a really good view. Booking through London box office & collecting tickets at the theatre was also really easy and simple.
Lauren London Box Office customer
A must see
After seeing the movie many years ago I was excited to see the live show so I took my wife as a birthday treat for her. We were very fortunate to get a stall seat placing us right in front of the stage. My wife and I were not disappointed as the story unfold in a musical bonanza. We were transformed back in time to enjoy some wonderful sixties and seventies sounds which we both loved. A great night out.

DREAMGIRLS, charting the rise to success of a 1960's Supremes-style girl group 'The Dreams', crackles along at a lively pace with plenty of soul, sass and colour.
Against the backdrop of America's post-civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's, we follow the girls from slightly awkward teen hopefuls, 'The Dreamettes', through the trials and tribulations of showbiz to become the hugely successful 'Dreams'.Read more

There’s only six months to go until the BIG musical of 2016 opens at the Savoy Theatre. It’s DREAM GIRLS of course and the producers have announced a new tidbit of information to keep us intrigued.
It’s already been reported that Amber Riley will only play the lead role for seven performances a week. This isn't unusual when a part is exhausting to sing. The artist’s vocal chords just can’t take the gruelling schedule and if you go to a matinee or Monday night show in the West End and on Broadway you’ll often see the cover, what used to be called the understudy, standing in for the star.Read more

The word on the theatrical grapevine is that prolific producer Sonia Friedman has battled off tough competition to secure the rights to the iconic Broadway musical Dreamgirls, and has her sights on a big West End opening.
Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway back in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre to a rapturous reception. The production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards including for Best Musical, and won six. The show was revived again on Broadway in 1987, but it has never ventured over to the West End.Read more
