Dreamgirls in London
Starring:
Amber Riley, Ruth Brown, Karen Mav
If you were lucky enough to catch the original 1981 musical or the 2006 film, you'll be raring to go. Dreamgirls is back on stage and it's a fresh new version designed to delight. The star of the show this time around is Glee's Amber Riley, a songstress to reckon with and a diva with a truly massive voice.
Amber Riley has played the role of the remarkable soul diva Mercedes Jones through six seasons of Glee, the hit TV show, and by all accounts she won the central role of Effie with ease.
Rather than stick to the original, producer Sonia Friedman has completely re imagined the story to give it a boost worthy of the 21st century. It's just as powerful now as it was back then. The music is a legend too, courtesy of Henry Krieger, and the lyrics and book are by Tom Eyen.
The story explores the life and times of the Dreams, a young female singing trio, and their rise to super-stardom in the glittering 1960s. Apparently the award-winning Friedman has acquired the rights for a full West End production of the show, and Casey Nicholaw – who directed The Book of Mormon and Aladdin – is tipped to direct.
The details are fairly sketchy right now but we'll know the full story by March 2016. The show's actually set to hit the stage in late 2016.
The new production has caused an international stir, with newspapers all over the world – including the Indian Express – reporting on Amber Riley's involvement. It just goes to show what an enduringly popular and inspirational story it is.
Dream Girls – The story
It's 1960s Detroit. A talented girl soul band, the Dreams, is about to go for gold. If that sounds familiar, it's loosely based on the amazing tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes. This is an iconic musical tracing the lives and loves of the band and the people they encounter, remarkably convincing and studded with beautiful soul music.
What does Amber Riley say? Her pleasure is clear. She's very excited indeed. In her words, “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special!”
Dreamgirls previews at the Savoy Theatre in November, and opens officially the following month. If you only see one musical this year, it's worth waiting for this one!

I bought two tickets for my niece's 18th birthday present, as she really wanted to see the show. She was beyond words and very excited to go and see the show, she took her mother with her and they both said it was the best show they have seen. The singing was fantastic, the acting and atmosphere was brilliant. They had a fantastic time and they both said they would see it again. Only let down was the price of drinks at the interval £27 for 2 wines / or £70 for a bottle of prosecco, that is outrageous.

My friends and I found the show very boring. There was no real plot line and you couldn't often hear what the actors were singing - when you could hear the lyrics, they just kept repeating the same line over and over again. Very poorly written. I would not bother going to see this show - you will be disappointed.

I loved the show but was saddened by the lack of etiquette of the people sitting around me, since when has it been good manners to eat sweets so that the entire theatre can hear you, Delve into boxes of popcorn and haribo type sweets and make even more noise. My son in law and best friend have decided to not attend the theatre anymore as the performance are invariably spoilt by theatre goers with no etiquette.

A fantastic show. Loved the costumes especially the glitter and sparkle. I walk with a rollator, and the young member of staff ( he was 18) who saw me to my seat was very attentive, and really looked after me. The system of ordering and receiving drinks and snacks at our seats worked really well. Although perhaps a little pricey. The young guy who assisted me also explained that they like people to leave their rubbish in the bags that the snacks arrived in as when collected they are sorted out and recycled.

Other than the couple of lovely duets the music was much too loud. I have seen over 75 musicals and have never had to plug my ears to understand the lyrics. It should not be a rock concert. The sound technician needs to turn off the mics because the actors’ voices don’t need the amplification. Very disappointing.

DREAMGIRLS, charting the rise to success of a 1960's Supremes-style girl group 'The Dreams', crackles along at a lively pace with plenty of soul, sass and colour.
Against the backdrop of America's post-civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's, we follow the girls from slightly awkward teen hopefuls, 'The Dreamettes', through the trials and tribulations of showbiz to become the hugely successful 'Dreams'.

Who will be your Dream Girl?
by Phil Willmott | Tuesday, May 17 2016, 09:46
There’s only six months to go until the BIG musical of 2016 opens at the Savoy Theatre. It’s DREAM GIRLS of course and the producers have announced a new tidbit of information to keep us intrigued.
It’s already been reported that Amber Riley will only play the lead role for seven performances a week. This isn't unusual when a part is exhausting to sing. The artist’s vocal chords just can’t take the gruelling schedule and if you go to a matinee or Monday night show in the West End and on Broadway you’ll often see the cover, what used to be called the understudy, standing in for the star.
