If you were lucky enough to catch the original 1981 musical or the 2006 film, you'll be raring to go. Dreamgirls is back on stage and it's a fresh new version designed to delight. The star of the show this time around is Glee's Amber Riley, a songstress to reckon with and a diva with a truly massive voice.
Amber Riley has played the role of the remarkable soul diva Mercedes Jones through six seasons of Glee, the hit TV show, and by all accounts she won the central role of Effie with ease.
Rather than stick to the original, producer Sonia Friedman has completely re imagined the story to give it a boost worthy of the 21st century. It's just as powerful now as it was back then. The music is a legend too, courtesy of Henry Krieger, and the lyrics and book are by Tom Eyen.
The story explores the life and times of the Dreams, a young female singing trio, and their rise to super-stardom in the glittering 1960s. Apparently the award-winning Friedman has acquired the rights for a full West End production of the show, and Casey Nicholaw – who directed The Book of Mormon and Aladdin – is tipped to direct.
The details are fairly sketchy right now but we'll know the full story by March 2016. The show's actually set to hit the stage in late 2016.
The new production has caused an international stir, with newspapers all over the world – including the Indian Express – reporting on Amber Riley's involvement. It just goes to show what an enduringly popular and inspirational story it is.
Dream Girls – The story
It's 1960s Detroit. A talented girl soul band, the Dreams, is about to go for gold. If that sounds familiar, it's loosely based on the amazing tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes. This is an iconic musical tracing the lives and loves of the band and the people they encounter, remarkably convincing and studded with beautiful soul music.
What does Amber Riley say? Her pleasure is clear. She's very excited indeed. In her words, “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special!”
Dreamgirls previews at the Savoy Theatre in November, and opens officially the following month. If you only see one musical this year, it's worth waiting for this one!

Amazing - Amber Riley was utterly fabulous!
This show was musical theatre at its best - loud, sparkling and emotional! Yes the story isn't new - its a loose tale of an American Girl Band trying to breakthrough, but it is done exceptionally well and all the cast were brilliant, the dancing, the costumes and the powerful songs were incredible. Amber Riley was truly fabulous - her voice was so powerful. Her co stars had exceptional voices too. It is loud but I could hear clearly form a seat in the middle of the dress circle, it wasn't too loud and the audience last night gave several standing ovations - even mid show!! Don't listen to the haters give it a go!

Fabulous singing throughout . Not a duff note or song. Costumes were top notch and snazzy lighting which really enhanced the performance. Some big West End stars in the making .

Please go and see this show, you wont be disappointed. The whole cast have incredible voices and the dances are fabulous. The scenery at first seems simple, but it is oh so effective and really creates the setting. Amber Riley was indisposed the night I went and sadly i didnt get the name of her understudy for 08/03, but she was totally and utterly spell-bindingly good. I cried at the end of the first act - it was so powerful and emotional. Just go and see for yourself.....

Not My Cuppa Tea
Didn't really know what to expect from this show, but unfortunately it didn't rock my boat. The two main things for me were; the music didn't sound great sitting up in the gods and there wasn't much to the imagination with regards to the storyline. ☹️⭐️⭐️/5

Exceptionally talented cast
Dreamgirls was a visual and aural feast. The music and acting was outstanding and the entire audience lept to their feet and gave a standing ovation.

Fantastic show from minute the curtain went up. Packed with excellent music, acting and energy. Standing ovation at the end and throughout the show we rocked!

Wendy London Box Office customer
With all the hype and reviews for this show we were expecting something much more entertaining. The story is poor. There are 2 good songs and that's it really. Not the actors fault- just the quality of writing really. There are much better shows on offer in the West End.
Jean London Box Office customer
Absolutely superb show, amazingly talented cast. Fabulous costumes and score. Beautiful theatre. We had a wonderful time!

Absolutly epic! You will want to dance, sing & cry... the vocals were off the scale, the costumes were not only fabulous but the changes were so clever. It's a must see for all!
Lydia London Box Office customer
The show is truly amazing. As soon as Effi uses her vocal cords, chills ran down my spine. The theatre itself is rather confined, as most things in London are.
Stefan London Box Office customer
This was a good show and the performances were fair. Amber Riley however was exceptional and it was her performance which prompted me to score the show as good overall.

A fantastic performance
Who could fail to be moved by Amber Riley singing 'And I'm Telling You' This is a small theatre, the sound quality is excellent and her performance was emotional believable and intense. However the whole cast gave 100% and the music and storyline fantastic.
Carol London Box Office customer
Very good show. Amber was an amazing actress and her voice was outstanding.
Abbie London Box Office customer
Effie and jimmy earlys characters stole the show. The girl playing Deena didnt have a very strong voice. They changed the words on listen and I felt that it was ruined by this. While I understand that everyone wouldn't have seen dreamgirls before and they have to explain to people what was happening it took away from that song ants part of the show.
Ann London Box Office customer
Absolutely awesome show out of this world

From the moment you arrive at this very special location, tucked inside one of Londons oldest hotels, the magic begins. From the art deco interior to the helpful and engaging staff the whole evening was fabulous. I would have liked to upgrade to the VIP package, which I have had before but this wasn't available on the website? This however did not effect the amazing performance that all cast members provided.

Best Show I've seen
Dream Girls is the best musical I have EVER seen. The music is fantastic (will bring a tear to your eye). Standing ovation as the interval curtain fell at the end of the song "And I'm telling you". Just amazing from start to finish. Can't wait to see it again!

Fantastic lead actress well supported by cast
Our only true reason for initially wishing to see the show was because Amber Riley was playing lead - she way exceeded our expectations. Would not have gone otherwise as not a great deal of storyline, however, amazing singing by all and glad we went Amber Riley or no Amber Riley! :)
Joy London Box Office customer
probably the best contemporary musical i have seen.
the bar areas and cloakroom are tiny - actually smaller than tiny and not suitable really for the number of people; also be sure not just to stand in the que when you arrive..............this was for restricted entry but lack of staff on hand was not good.

Absolutely fabulous. Singing amazing. Amber Riley is truly a star. Her voice is incredible and her acting is superb. She got a well deserved standing ovation when she sung " I am telling you ". A vehicle for a 'star'. Poor story, no memorable music, just very loud singing, covering a weak story line. Many, many better shows in the West End.

The cast were great. The show was fabulous but overshadowed by a noisy female behind me swearing her head off! Not decent behaviour considering the surroundings. However this isn't a negative comments about the show but it impacted on my enjoyment. The theatre was also a little cold.

DREAMGIRLS, charting the rise to success of a 1960's Supremes-style girl group 'The Dreams', crackles along at a lively pace with plenty of soul, sass and colour.
Against the backdrop of America's post-civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's, we follow the girls from slightly awkward teen hopefuls, 'The Dreamettes', through the trials and tribulations of showbiz to become the hugely successful 'Dreams'.Read more

There’s only six months to go until the BIG musical of 2016 opens at the Savoy Theatre. It’s DREAM GIRLS of course and the producers have announced a new tidbit of information to keep us intrigued.
It’s already been reported that Amber Riley will only play the lead role for seven performances a week. This isn't unusual when a part is exhausting to sing. The artist’s vocal chords just can’t take the gruelling schedule and if you go to a matinee or Monday night show in the West End and on Broadway you’ll often see the cover, what used to be called the understudy, standing in for the star.Read more

The word on the theatrical grapevine is that prolific producer Sonia Friedman has battled off tough competition to secure the rights to the iconic Broadway musical Dreamgirls, and has her sights on a big West End opening.
Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway back in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre to a rapturous reception. The production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards including for Best Musical, and won six. The show was revived again on Broadway in 1987, but it has never ventured over to the West End.Read more
