If you were lucky enough to catch the original 1981 musical or the 2006 film, you'll be raring to go. Dreamgirls is back on stage and it's a fresh new version designed to delight. The star of the show this time around is Glee's Amber Riley, a songstress to reckon with and a diva with a truly massive voice.

Amber Riley has played the role of the remarkable soul diva Mercedes Jones through six seasons of Glee, the hit TV show, and by all accounts she won the central role of Effie with ease.

Rather than stick to the original, producer Sonia Friedman has completely re imagined the story to give it a boost worthy of the 21st century. It's just as powerful now as it was back then. The music is a legend too, courtesy of Henry Krieger, and the lyrics and book are by Tom Eyen.

The story explores the life and times of the Dreams, a young female singing trio, and their rise to super-stardom in the glittering 1960s. Apparently the award-winning Friedman has acquired the rights for a full West End production of the show, and Casey Nicholaw – who directed The Book of Mormon and Aladdin – is tipped to direct.

The details are fairly sketchy right now but we'll know the full story by March 2016. The show's actually set to hit the stage in late 2016.

The new production has caused an international stir, with newspapers all over the world – including the Indian Express – reporting on Amber Riley's involvement. It just goes to show what an enduringly popular and inspirational story it is.

Dream Girls – The story

It's 1960s Detroit. A talented girl soul band, the Dreams, is about to go for gold. If that sounds familiar, it's loosely based on the amazing tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes. This is an iconic musical tracing the lives and loves of the band and the people they encounter, remarkably convincing and studded with beautiful soul music.

What does Amber Riley say? Her pleasure is clear. She's very excited indeed. In her words, “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special!”

Dreamgirls previews at the Savoy Theatre in November, and opens officially the following month. If you only see one musical this year, it's worth waiting for this one!

Stunning singing, a must see

London Box Office customer

Their voices made me cry! Super singers

London Box Office customer

Definitely must see

Excellent show from start to finish. Don't be late as the beginning of the show sets the storyline for the rest of the play.

London Box Office customer

Music cast story everything was great

Amazing

London Box Office customer

Must see!

London Box Office customer

Excellent musical

Highly recommend this musical, brilliant vocals and highly enjoyable

London Box Office customer

Spectacular voices- stunning costumes

The ability of the performers and sheer energy of the performance was stunning. The music, rather than catchy show tunes, conveyed a depth of emotion and those emotions felt very real. It was great to see so many strong female performers together

London Box Office customer

Stunning vocals

Wow - amazing show - the big number just before the interval is emotionally charged those vocals were something else

London Box Office customer

Effie was amazing 😉

Dreamgirls was amazing, it follows the story fully. I would advise to watch the film first to get the full power of the show. Effie was outstanding. My daughter and I loved every minute and would happily watch it again

London Box Office customer

Dancing could have been better singing brilliant and acting was ok

London Box Office customer

Must See!

Great music

London Box Office customer

Loved it!

Exceptionally talent bunch of actors. Some of the singing was very emotional - brought a tear to my eye when Effie sang her song after being dumped by the group. I really loved this show. Great 60’s music

London Box Office customer

Other than the couple of lovely duets the music was much too loud. I have seen over 75 musicals and have never had to plug my ears to understand the lyrics. It should not be a rock concert. The sound technician needs to turn off the mics because the actors’ voices don’t need the amplification. Very disappointing.

London Box Office customer

Outstanding

Gives you goosebumps. The singing is tremendous!!! A must see.

London Box Office customer

Dream Girls

Wow.... simply fantastic

London Box Office customer

Fantastic evening with the Dream girls

London Box Office customer

Very entertaining musical

Booked the show for our wedding anniversary as a special treat. Excellent acting, great costumes, powerful voices, excellent plot, we truly enjoyed our matinee performance. Stall seats are right at the bottom of the Theatre so be prepared to walk down two sets of stairs. Toilets are available on all floors as are bars. The Savoy Theatre is at a 5 minute walking distance from Charing Cross underground station and is surrounded by restaurants if you wish to have dinner after the show. The Savoy Hotel is next door and well know Salieri restaurant opposite across the road.

London Box Office customer

Brilliant show

London Box Office customer

Must see

This is entertainment at its very best, funny, absorbing, historical and something for all the family.

London Box Office customer

Outstanding

Absolutely brilliant , acting , singing & dance was just amazing. Would recommend to anyone thouroughly enjoyed it well worth the trip down from Liverpool .

London Box Office customer

Touching story but slightly too high on the decibel range.

Very clever staging and lighting. Touching story. One very off-putting consideration is that a young woman was eating a sushi meal next to us and the area around her was thick with food smells. This MUST BE STOPPED.

London Box Office customer

Full of energy

Great music the lead lady was amazing!

London Box Office customer

A must see

London Box Office customer

Disappointing

£40 for two tickets in the upper section so not a great outlay for a London Theatre Show but just relieved I didn’t spend more. Wouldn’t recommend on any account.

London Box Office customer

The girls were screaming, not singing.

London Box Office customer

Top show!

Amazing voices and staging!! Really great costumes too. Great for everyone.

London Box Office customer

Very good artists

London Box Office customer

A must see

London Box Office customer

Perfect if you want to spend a good time!

London Box Office customer

Fabtastic

London Box Office customer

A dream to watch

The best musical I have seen for a very long time

London Box Office customer

Strong female voices!

The show was itself quite good but the storyline had some deficits. It felt at times like the creators had too many ideas and wanted to give each a shot which resulted in flat side-narratives. Nevertheless, the voices of the three main female actors were phenomenal and are a must-hear!! Each has its own brilliance to it.

London Box Office customer

Dreamgirls the soundtrack

Audibly the show was brilliant, there are some fabulous vocals. Very humorous in places with a good storyline !

London Box Office customer

Amazing vocals

London Box Office customer

Amazing

London Box Office customer

Too “shouty”. Good voices overworked. No memorable songs. Stiff acting. Trite plot. Can’t see why it’s run for so long.

London Box Office customer

A Spectacular Soul Singing Star has Risen

If you imagine the sun rises in the morning and starts to sing with power and warmth and feeling and soul......then you‘ll love this show!

London Box Office customer

A must see

London Box Office customer

Powerful

Very good performances especially from the actress playing Marisha Wallace (Effie White). She was simply outstanding and had the audience standing a couple times at her incredible vocals.

London Box Office customer

Powerful musical production, the character Effie had such a wonderful voice

Really enjoyed the show but not much of a storyline

London Box Office customer

Soaring high

Such great energy! Such great singing performances! The music, the costumes, the light ... Everything. Probably the best musical I've seen ❤

London Box Office customer

A great show

We liked the powerful voices and the way the entire cast took us through the story.

London Box Office customer

Good professional show

Enjoyed this show more than expected. It was well performed rate it good as it didn’t give me the goosebumps— had at Tina Turner show. Pleased I went even though I was tired, hence could of affected my judgement

London Box Office customer

Stunning

London Box Office customer

Fantastic voices

There was a technical problem on the show for 10nmin

London Box Office customer

One of those must see shows.

Be patient during the first 15 minutes while the story gets going. The reward that follows is one of the best shows you will see ... ever. Singing and the orchestra are first class.. outstanding. You will leave the show with those songs and performances refusing to leave your mind. Fabulous.

London Box Office customer

Wonderful

Amazing spectacular!

London Box Office customer

This was an amazing show. The cast were unbelievable singers. The only downside is I wish there was a little more talking instead of singing in between songs. But it was still an amazing show.

London Box Office customer

Poor sound quality and lots screeching

Costumes good but orchestra too loud and singers voices were not clear, which resulted in inability to hear the words of the songs. Some songs were better than others, but I would not recommend this show.

London Box Office customer

Horrendous noise.

Too loud too much screaming. Just one constant shrill !!! A night mare of a show. It gave the six of us headaches. Hated every minute of it.

London Box Office customer

Superbe spectacle

London Box Office customer

Best singing I have ever heard

London Box Office customer

Average

London Box Office customer

Fabulicious a must see

This show is awesome. Anyone & everyone should see it. The song your gonna love me gave me goose bumps. I can't say enough about it love love love

London Box Office customer

Seen better

Costumes, dancing, music effort all amazing. We were in Row F and the view was faultless. The negatives were the voices of the talented singers were forced and strained to achieve the soul feeling. They don't need to be that loud. Maybe we were too close.

London Box Office customer

Excellent from start to finish!

London Box Office customer

Dreamgirls was a dream

London Box Office customer

Amazing show

London Box Office customer

Great acting

Effie was great. The acting from the cast was good only the show is not live music. Costumes were great and lighting as well. Good show

London Box Office customer

must see

This was an amazing, wonderful musical, i felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up at parts. i recommend anyone who likes musicals to watch but it is definitely a girly musical.

London Box Office customer

There were a couple crude sexual innuendos that I thought were inappropriate for under 15. The volume was also too high for such a small venue especially for the Effie character. Over all we enjoyed this production a great deal.

London Box Office customer

Great Experience, but bring ear plugs

When seeing DREAM GIRLSS you have one of two choices. (1) Take out your hearing aids, or (2) Bring Ear Plugs. The decibel levels were extremely high and it made the entire performance unpleased because our family all walk out with a harsh head ache. Possibly sitting in another section would help, but unfortunately we all had a bad experience. This makes the excellent singing go down the tube and you turn off high levels. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!! IT HAS GIVEN ME A VERY BAD OPINION OF DREAM GIRLS.

London Box Office customer

Gorgeous dresses

London Box Office customer

production!

London Box Office customer

A must see

That is a show ! Energetic, colourful, amazing acting... Makes you laugh until you can't breathe then cry a river A must see if you want to experience a true Broadway show

London Box Office customer

Sparkly with good vocals but sloppy

Storyline not bad , singing excellent , acting good, dancing very sloppy . Needed cleaning .

London Box Office customer

Outfits and voices outstanding

The singing and costumes were out of this world. The show was good and flowed well. The seats are small with no space for legs and very hard and uncomfortable.

London Box Office customer

Fierce & Fabulous

London Box Office customer

Capital D for Dreamgirls

A fantastic show, voices were hair raising at times bad story I loved.

London Box Office customer

Excellent, brilliant voices a must see

Excellent show really enjoyed it . Considering we had tickets in the God’s the view was still good albeit a little on the loud side . But definitely a must see fully recommended

London Box Office customer

Do not go in hot weather

Whilst the show was fun to watch the dialogue was poor and in the heat it became unbearable to sit in the theatre so we had to leave early.

London Box Office customer

Great entertainment

Great fun show

London Box Office customer

London Box Office customer

Spectacular

Amazing feel good show. Cannot wait to go back!

London Box Office customer

Coloful

London Box Office customer

Fantastic

The show was fantastic. Effie was awesome. And the rest of the crew were so professional and gave a brilliant performance. I give them 10 out of 10. Absolutely loved it .

London Box Office customer

FAB SHOW

The show was excellent with high quality singing from all of the cast, great sets and costumes.

London Box Office customer

Amazing Soul Singers!

London Box Office customer

Great show! Very entertaining.

London Box Office customer

Mind blowing goddess

I have never been in a theater before so this was mind blowing for me, my sister and my brother. We were just speechless and so amazed by how lightning, decore and actresses clothes and hairstyles were changed from scene to another so seamlessly and to top it all off the music and the singing just brought it to a whole nother level.

London Box Office customer

Great show real story

London Box Office customer

Boring

Vocals sounded like actors were shouting or screaming to compete with the music. Slow story line.

London Box Office customer

One for the Ladies, Girl power

London Box Office customer

great show, old theater, for those who love the movie

London Box Office customer

Visually spectacular, a must see!

Honestly was blown away by the whole experience. The acting and singing was too-notch and full of charismatic performances. We sat in the middle of the dress circle and were fortunate to have a great view. I had read beforehand that it might be very loud and in some instances the volume was amped up, but that didn’t take away from the overall experience. Kudos also to the set and lighting designers, as they did an outstanding job!

London Box Office customer

Great!

London Box Office customer

Fantastic

Absolutely had the best night, amazing show.

London Box Office customer

Vivid show

Great performance, excellent singers, beautiful decors, a must see

London Box Office customer

spend funds elsewhere

i go to the theatre to hopefully enjoy the experience. this was far from the case for dreamgirls. music was far too loud and often unintelligible. theatre itself was far too hot. not a good night at all, frankly wouldn't recommend the show at all.

London Box Office customer

Good for people who enjoy little dialogue / story and lots of songs and dancing

My wife enjoyed the show immensely, I couldn't follow the plot, although to be fair I don't really think there was one, the dialogue was mainly sung and hard to catch. The performances were however very professional, particularly the lead female who has a phenomenal voice. Some of the songs were really good, lots were fairly average. I think if big costumes, dancing and razzle dazzle is your thing then you will enjoy this show a lot. To be honest I am glad I went along but I could happily live having not seen it and I wouldn't go again

London Box Office customer

A must see... amazing voice!!

London Box Office customer

Disappointed

London Box Office customer

2 Hours of Screaming

London Box Office customer

Fantastic night!

London Box Office customer

Very loud and incoherent

This is a very loud show where most of the music and acting is shouting at each other. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of melodic music or variation. Also I couldn't understand most of the dialog or the lyrics due to the shouting style.

Dreamgirls sets closing date in the West End

12 Jun 2018

Dreamgirls Hurry! If you haven't seen the glorious DREAMGIRLS in the West End you only have until January 12th when it closes in the West End ahead of a national tour.

It's one of the best loved musicals of the past 50 years, a reputation cemented by a terrific movie and the rave reviews of both critics and audiences who have seen it at the Savoy Theatre.

Review: DREAMGIRLS at The Savoy Theatre

11 Jan 2017

dreamgirls-production-shot.jpg DREAMGIRLS, charting the rise to success of a 1960's Supremes-style girl group 'The Dreams', crackles along at a lively pace with plenty of soul, sass and colour.

Against the backdrop of America's post-civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's, we follow the girls from slightly awkward teen hopefuls, 'The Dreamettes', through the trials and tribulations of showbiz to become the hugely successful 'Dreams'.

Who will be your Dream Girl?

17 May 2016

Dreamgirls There’s only six months to go until the BIG musical of 2016 opens at the Savoy Theatre. It’s DREAM GIRLS of course and the producers have announced a new tidbit of information to keep us intrigued.

It’s already been reported that Amber Riley will only play the lead role for seven performances a week. This isn't unusual when a part is exhausting to sing. The artist’s vocal chords just can’t take the gruelling schedule and if you go to a matinee or Monday night show in the West End and on Broadway you’ll often see the cover, what used to be called the understudy, standing in for the star.

Snap up your Dreamgirls tickets! This is going to sell out!

04 Apr 2016

Dreamgirls It’s been a long wait!

Thirty-five years after its ground-breaking original Broadway production the West End will finally get its own production of Tony Award-winning musical DREAMGIRLS when it opens at the Savoy Theatre in November, 2016.

Could Dreamgirls be coming to the West End?

14 Mar 2015

Dreamgirls LondonThe word on the theatrical grapevine is that prolific producer Sonia Friedman has battled off tough competition to secure the rights to the iconic Broadway musical Dreamgirls, and has her sights on a big West End opening.

Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway back in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre to a rapturous reception. The production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards including for Best Musical, and won six. The show was revived again on Broadway in 1987, but it has never ventured over to the West End.
