If you were lucky enough to catch the original 1981 musical or the 2006 film, you'll be raring to go. Dreamgirls is back on stage and it's a fresh new version designed to delight. The star of the show this time around is Glee's Amber Riley, a songstress to reckon with and a diva with a truly massive voice.
Amber Riley has played the role of the remarkable soul diva Mercedes Jones through six seasons of Glee, the hit TV show, and by all accounts she won the central role of Effie with ease.
Rather than stick to the original, producer Sonia Friedman has completely re imagined the story to give it a boost worthy of the 21st century. It's just as powerful now as it was back then. The music is a legend too, courtesy of Henry Krieger, and the lyrics and book are by Tom Eyen.
The story explores the life and times of the Dreams, a young female singing trio, and their rise to super-stardom in the glittering 1960s. Apparently the award-winning Friedman has acquired the rights for a full West End production of the show, and Casey Nicholaw – who directed The Book of Mormon and Aladdin – is tipped to direct.
The details are fairly sketchy right now but we'll know the full story by March 2016. The show's actually set to hit the stage in late 2016.
The new production has caused an international stir, with newspapers all over the world – including the Indian Express – reporting on Amber Riley's involvement. It just goes to show what an enduringly popular and inspirational story it is.
Dream Girls – The story
It's 1960s Detroit. A talented girl soul band, the Dreams, is about to go for gold. If that sounds familiar, it's loosely based on the amazing tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes. This is an iconic musical tracing the lives and loves of the band and the people they encounter, remarkably convincing and studded with beautiful soul music.
What does Amber Riley say? Her pleasure is clear. She's very excited indeed. In her words, “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special!”
Dreamgirls previews at the Savoy Theatre in November, and opens officially the following month. If you only see one musical this year, it's worth waiting for this one!

Dreamgirls, a definite must see!
Dreamgirls stayed very true to the original stoeyline, and the characters were very vibrant and in keeping with those in the film. Colourful and great vintage costumes, and the staging and placement of the cast were spot on. It really drew you in to their world! An excellent musical that kept attention throughout and left you wanted to know "what happens now" with all the characters. Highly recommend!

Amber Riley just blew everyone away. Her powerful voice and performance attitude is just one of the best I have ever witnessed and this role was made for her.Simply breathtaking.

The performance of Marisha Wallace as Effie was outstanding & was in no way a second choice to Amber Riley who we were expecting to see. Overall it was a fantastic afternoons entertainment that I would recommend anyone of any age group to go and see.

EVERYTHING IN ONE SHOW
Had everything in it!! Great songs, singing, music. The actors and actresses enhanced and gave the really LIFE moments of the REALITY. And a show that at times required the audience like we were there as part of the show. AMAZING!!!

Absolute awe for me and my partner. Such a brilliant performance by the actors all!!!
FABRIZIO London Box Office customer
Loved the show, the songs the dancing & the acting! Only thing that brought it down slightly is the price I was £43 for 4 drinks... only to realise when I got home I was charged for 3 glasses of processco instead of 2, which is annoying but I should have looked at the receipt after purchasing.

A fabulous evening's entertainment
Lovely theatre, quite small so everywhere feels close to the action. And comfy seats with legroom. Acting, singing and dancing all excellent and the costume changes were ingenious!
Elisabeth London Box Office customer
Lovely visual show with great costumes and backdrop. Unfortunately I found the music too loud and the dialog was hard to grasp as it to was very loud
Diana London Box Office customer
No Amber Riley
Marisha was amazing, reduced me to tears, & the other cast members were incredible, however we specifically booked these tickets from Australia months in advance as this date was advertised as a performance in which Amber Riley would be present. It was obvious from others comments around us that we were not the only ones extremely disappointed at her absence. However, it is hard to now say that we were disappointed as the show was absolutely amazing.

Brilliant must see
Exceptional voices all cast

This is a must go to show. The singing and dancing was exceptional. Amber Riley was amazing and she sang beyond fantastic. There was a wall of emotion and the audience were crying giving a standing ovation at the first half. I have never been to a show that has done that before. Outstanding and brilliant. I felt moved and had a wonderful evening feeling beyond satisfied.

Dreamgirls is jaw dropping!
The cast was wonderful! Incredible vocals, strong dancers and excellent storytellers. I laughed, cried, gasped and ALMOST peed my pants before intermission when Amber Riley sang "And I Am Telling You." Worth every penny! And reasonable prices!
Jacques London Box Office customer
Due to the storyline there are often only very few people on stage. Personally I like it when there is more going on. The singing was amazing but I feel the atmosphere is probably better in the evening rather that the afteroon.

Best singing in.a musical EVER
This was an amazing performance, a real theatre spectacle, great vocals, moving and emotional...gave me goose bumps. One of the best musicals I have seen down to the singing and vocal talent on stage in one production. But of course the bright lights, sparkle and dazzling gowns helped also. A must see for those who love musical theatre as it lived up to its name and was vocally dreamy.

The wonderful Amber Riley was absolutely superb as were the other members of the cast. The dancers, musicians and supporting cast were excellent too.
MAUREEN London Box Office customer
Really good show - brilliant actors for all ages to enjoy! Like a musical which was awesome! Thanks
Lucy London Box Office customer
I would recommend watching the show to see the talents of the actor playing 'Jimmy Early' because he stole the show! The general storyline was portrayed averagely. For a West End show, unfortunately I would not consider this professional as I was disappointed with the acting and some of the dancers were unenthusiastic and out of time. Many actors lacked character which made it difficult to understand the storyline as well as lack of articulation. I was also disappointed that there was no official announcement before the show stating that Amber Riley would not be performing on a day that isn't scheduled as her day off. Although there were minimum signs around the theatre, I'm sure many audience members would have appreciated an announcement of some kind. I would recommend watching the show if you've never seen it, and I would like to come and watch again one day in hope that what I found disappointing this time round may just be the fact the show is new to the London stage and will be improved as the show prolongs.
Katie London Box Office customer
Watch the film first in order to understand the story as the musical does not give a clear depiction of key storylines.
Maureen London Box Office customer
Very nice performance, singers were amazing. It was a bit too loud for the theatre, and very very warm in the theatre. This made it uncomfortable to sit in there for so long.
dialla London Box Office customer
Great music , great colour & staging . I would go again in a heartbeat

Fantastic a real good feel factor loved every minute of it. The costumes the stage design the performances were incredable. Could see it again to day.

Less sad than the movie!
Saw the movie when I was younger and it broke my heart, had no intentions of going to see the play. Then, they did a preview at the Pride Festival of "Listen" and it was so good our whole group decided we had to go. We were not disappointed, really well done and not as oppressively tragic as the movie!

Takes you back in time and sweeps you off your feet with breathtaking vocals
The show was one of the best I've ever seen. Not because of sophisticated special effects (the stage was pretty simple) but because of the actors and their incredible voices! I would recommend this show to everyone!

Mind blowingly good
I saw this in march with a friend and as it is my 2 daughters favourite film, I decided to take them as a joint birthday treat. We were not disappointed. Amber Riley wasnt playing Effie White when we went in march as she was ill, so last night was a treat. I thought it was excellent first time round, but Amber Riley ...oh my what a voice and she is so emotive in her singing. The rest of the cast is fantastic too - nobody is weak and they all hold their own. From dazzling costumes, to seemless scenery changes to wonderful harmonies.... Dont miss this show, its a must.... you really wont be disappointed.

Wonderful show! songs that hit you in the chest and make your heart swell! So pleased we got to see Amber Riley. If you've seen the film you know the story, and this show does not disappoint. Brilliant costume changes, sets, lightings, songs, acting, dancing- the works! A lady in front said it was a bit loud, but then she should've gone to see something else as I thought it was perfection! Went to the Saturday matinee and it was fab!

Amazing Show !!
3 spontaneous well deserved standing ovations during the show. That's how good it is. Let's begin with the cast. It is extremely good with no weak points. But the following three members deserve special attention. Adam Bernard as James thunder early reminded me of James brown with the dancing grace of Michael Jackson. Liisi Lafontaine as Deena Jones completely surprised me, as at the beginning she seems transparent with little to no voice, but at the end of the show with her transformation as a superstar she is charismatic, strong with a very beautiful full voice. Finally what can be said about Amber Riley ? Great acting with amazing, emotional, guttural knock out performances. Her rendition of "and. Telling you" is surely one of the great performances of any musical. This is award deserving performance. Incredible. It left me speechless. Go see that show, with that cast. As I said, several deserved standing ovations during the show.

DREAMGIRLS, charting the rise to success of a 1960's Supremes-style girl group 'The Dreams', crackles along at a lively pace with plenty of soul, sass and colour.
Against the backdrop of America's post-civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's, we follow the girls from slightly awkward teen hopefuls, 'The Dreamettes', through the trials and tribulations of showbiz to become the hugely successful 'Dreams'.Read more

There’s only six months to go until the BIG musical of 2016 opens at the Savoy Theatre. It’s DREAM GIRLS of course and the producers have announced a new tidbit of information to keep us intrigued.
It’s already been reported that Amber Riley will only play the lead role for seven performances a week. This isn't unusual when a part is exhausting to sing. The artist’s vocal chords just can’t take the gruelling schedule and if you go to a matinee or Monday night show in the West End and on Broadway you’ll often see the cover, what used to be called the understudy, standing in for the star.Read more

The word on the theatrical grapevine is that prolific producer Sonia Friedman has battled off tough competition to secure the rights to the iconic Broadway musical Dreamgirls, and has her sights on a big West End opening.
Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway back in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre to a rapturous reception. The production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards including for Best Musical, and won six. The show was revived again on Broadway in 1987, but it has never ventured over to the West End.Read more
