Every Brilliant Thing in London
Starring:
Lenny Henry
A heartrendingly beautiful exploration of depression is heading to the West End's @sohoplace this summer. Every Brilliant Thing is a one-person play performed by rotating guest performers, including Lenny Henry, Jonny Donahoe, Ambika Mod, Minnie Driver, and Sue Perkins. Written by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe, and originally premiered in Edinburgh eleven years ago.
Why should you see Every Brilliant Thing?
- Uniquely, this one-person show is performed by a different guest actor on different nights, which means you’ll have a chance to catch any one of these brilliant actors putting their own original spin on the story.
- The Guardian called Every Brilliant Thing ‘one of the funniest plays about depression you’ll ever see’. The show has a powerful and relatable message about navigating mental health, delivered in a simple, touching, and often humorous style that makes it easily accessible for all audiences.
- The play has evolved over time, including elements of audience participation and learning from mental health experts and those who’ve suffered with depression, but its message remains the same, making it a truly eye-opening experience for audiences, especially if you or someone you love has struggled with depression.
What is Every Brilliant Thing about?
Written by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe, Every Brilliant Thing follows a child making a list of every brilliant thing in the world for their mother, who is struggling with depression, spanning decades as it explores themes of mental health and resilience.
The story behind Every Brilliant Thing is equally heartwarming - it began as a couple of scratch shows at a Shropshire poetry festival twelve years ago, before premiering at Paines Plough’s Roundabout at Summerhall in Edinburgh in 2014. It has since toured internationally and appeared off-Broadway, been adapted into an HBO special, and revived in a sold-out 2024 anniversary run at Roundabout.
Now heading to the West End, experience a powerful, unique, and culturally significant story about life’s little joys which will leave you inspired.
