Jaja's African Hair Braiding in London
Jaja's is a bustling braiding salon in Harlem, New York, run by a lively, cheerful team of West African expert stylists, immigrants who've brought with them generations of braiding traditions. Here, women from across the neighbourhood community come to have masterpieces created on their heads. The play follows this group of women over the course of one hot summer day, filled with laughter, shared secrets, angry customers, betrayals - and above all, a collection of dreams that increasingly pit them against the city they love and call home.
From writer Jocelyn Bioh and director Monique Touko, the dream team behind School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, comes the UK premiere of the Tony Award-winning comedy, Jaja's African Hair Braiding. Packed with complex, brilliant female characters who are funny, whip-smart, and unique each in her own way, this play will sweep you off into the heart of Harlem and the tight-knit community that grows around Jaja's. It first premiered on Broadway in 2023 to resounding critical acclaim, with The New York Times calling it ‘a buffet of delights'. Now, UK audiences will have the chance to experience this joyful, clever play for the first time.
Book now to experience the joy, laughter, and community of Harlem, right here in the heart of London.

Like Looking In A MirrorI work for a black theatre collective non-profit in the Southern United States. We showcase work that centers black stories and storytellers, and this play and playwright are often apart of our conversations. I’m visiting on tour and decided to see JaJa’s for the first time because I haven’t seen it playing anywhere else. It was absolutely stunning, though I was left in complete disarray. I couldn’t stop crying. This show is so relevant today, though set in 2019. Immigration stories and tragedies like these happen every single day and many of us are left feeling powerless, hopeless, and grieved. The sense of community and uncertainty the show left me with were so real. Though I wished for a resolved ending, that is often how these tales go in real life America- Waiting. Questioning. Thank you to the entire cast and creative team for your work and dedication to telling the truth.

A Truly Beautiful WatchThe show was amazing and the acting coupled with a great storyline that blended humour with social commentary. Just made for a beautiful, funny as well as insightful watch. As someone who has been exposed to this culture from birth it was even more powerful to see components of my upbringing captured so brilliantly on stage

It was an amazing beautiful show. The actors the accents, the storytelling. I laughed. I almost cried. I would definitely recommend everyone to go and see thisThere wasn't one thing that I disliked in this show so it was storytelling was great. The acting was phenomenal. Got to meet the actors after and there was such a beautiful welcoming cast. We got more than I expected from the show but the only thing I would say it's not having the narrative that you can't make it in Africa but apart from that just beautiful. Amazing! Definitely going to go and see it again and again and I think everyone should see it. Take your your kids. Take your mom. Take your aunties to your brothers. Take your uncles. Take the neighbor down the road. Everybody
