Review of War Horse at the New London Theatre

War Horse The fact that the stars of this show are mechanically operated puppets does not detract at all from the emotion that you feel here. If anything, I would give this production more praise – making me cry at the obstacles that a horse and his owner overcome is nothing short of incredible!

I’ve always thought that the New London theatre was a strange venue. Obviously built much later than some of its older, more classically designed counterparts, it reminds me of the National Theatre in its concrete 1960s structure and its complicated interior design.

Review of The Commitments

Oppenheimer Another jukebox musical that you sit pleasantly through and then forget when you leave the theatre. The songs are brilliant as expected, but the storyline needs a lot of work for this to compare to others in its category.

The Palace Theatre is not a small place. Situated on the junction between the two main roads in London’s West End, it commands an almost perfect spot to catch the eye of tourists, theatregoers and commuters alike.

Review of Cats at the London Palladium

Cats at the London Palladium Not as good as the 20 years ago, but a magical evening nevertheless. For those who have seen it before it brings back old memories, for the newcomers looking for star quality, look no further than Nicole Scherzinger.

It was once the longest running musical in West End history, running for 21 years and nearly 9,000 performances. It originally sported a cast that included Bonnie Langford, Brian Blessed, Sarah Brightman, Wayne Sleep and of course Elaine Paige.

Review of La Soirée at Southbank Centre’s Winter Festival

La Soirée Definitely not a show for children, with the slightly naughty burlesque nudity to it. But the adults that go will be as amazed as any child seeing their first circus act, as there are some great performances here.

When you walked down London’s Southbank during the summer months, it was hard not to see the circus tent set up just by the London Eye, marking the start of the Southbank’s London Wonderground summer season. Once we get into the winter months, now walking down the Southbank people are beginning to see the Christmas market stalls being set up to mark the opening of the Southbank Centre’s Winter Festival. This year though, the circus tent has remained and this ‘Spiegeltent’ is playing host to La Soirée for those winter months. Mulled cider and acrobatics, sounds like a pretty brilliant combination!

Review of Once The Musical

Once The Musical A simple, no frills, heart wrenching production delivered with catchy original songs. The replacement cast is not quite up to scratch compared with the original, but this is definitely one to catch before it leaves the West End in March 2015.

Normally when a family member comes to stay, I inwardly groan. Now that’s not because I don’t love my family, but it does seem to be hard work taking tourists around the city of London. My flatmate on the other hand has a much more relaxed family, so when her sister came to stay with us I was excited at having another person to go to the theatre with. Not only an artistic soul like us, she is also applying for drama schools at the moment to do stage management and so was more than happy to tag along and pass comment on a musical with me. She really seemed the perfect choice to take along to the Phoenix Theatre and watch an Olivier award-winning musical before wandering to get a drink at half time from the on-stage bar and soak up the atmosphere.
