The Lady from the Sea in London

Adapted and directed by Simon Stone (Yerma, Phaedra), starring Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) and Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually), The Lady From the Sea is a haunting, dreamy story of a woman torn between her past and her present. In true Ibsen style, it’ll leave you mesmerised with its complex characters and tangled moral dilemmas.

Why should you see The Lady From the Sea?

  • Simon Stone is a master of breathing fresh life into familiar stories. The Lady From the Sea will be his first project at the Bridge Theatre, a gloriously immersive space perfect for exploring this intimate, character-driven play.
  • The show boasts a phenomenal cast, with Alicia Vikander playing Ellida in her theatre debut and Andrew Lincoln as Edward, in his much-anticipated return to the West End.

What is The Lady From the Sea about?

Alicia Vikander stars as Ellida, who feels bored and restless in her too-comfortable life. When a past lover appears at the remote country home she shares with her well-off doctor husband Edward, she must choose between the security of the life she has built and the unpredictability of the one she left behind.

Originally written by Henrik Ibsen in 1888, The Lady From the Sea is being adapted by Australian theatre and film director Simon Stone, known for his radical adaptations of classic works. In an interview, Stone said, “This play is about choice, about what we bury, and what comes crawling back to life”. He added, “Alicia was born to play Ellida. And Andrew… there’s something about watching him crack open emotional truth that’s just spellbinding”.

With a brilliant director and cast, an unbeatable theatre space, and a sweeping, dramatic exploration of humanity in all its complexities, The Lady From the Sea will be an unforgettable experience for audiences who appreciate a great and thought-provoking story.

Brilliant, modern adaptation of Ibsen.

The acting and staging were both first class. It was an intense play but with many moments of humour. The main actors were brilliant but the two characters of the daughters represented everything awful in today’s young people. They were shallow, ungrateful and totally lacking in charm.

Superb Second Half that took a while to reach

Perhaps deliberately, the first half of Lady from the Sea marks time, barely making use of the usually sublime Bridge theatre. The blocking turns the actors inward with long stretches where engagement and audibility are compromised (despite great effort by the actors). The payoff is in the superb second half when finally, the actors, setup and direction come together with a masterful use of the staging area. Come just to see that last frame!

Review: THE LADY FROM THE SEA at Bridge Theatre

by Stuart King | Friday, September 19 2025, 13:43

Ibsen’s remote lighthouse drama THE LADY FROM THE SEA hasn’t simply been dusted-off. Instead, courtesy of Simon Stone’s revisionist modernising of the play’s setting and references, it has been electrified and positively zings and spits with vitality.
