If you're interested in spotting the hot new musical theatre writers and performers you won't want to miss the forthcoming gala at the Noel Coward Theatre which includes performances from the nominees for The Stephen Sondheim Society's student performer of the year. The afternoon includes the announcement of the winner, both of this and a song writing prize set up by Styles and Drewe. You can hear a selection of the competing songs too.

Natalie Dormer switches from Thrones to Fur
By Phil Willmott Sunday, May 14 2017, 20:12
It's been announced that Natalie Dormer, who's utterly magnificent in TV's Game of Thrones, will be returning to the stage in a new production of Venus in Fur which previously had a short but attention-grabbing run on Broadway. She'll be playing an actress who, one rainy night, bursts in on a director insisting he auditions her for the lead role in a play about sadomasochistic sex based on the 1870 novel Venus In Fur by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.

Review: OBSESSION at The Barbican Centre
By Nastazja Domaradzka Wednesday, May 10 2017, 08:23

Review: ROMEO AND JULIET at the Union Theatre
By Phil Willmott Tuesday, May 9 2017, 10:15
In the interests of full disclosure I should reveal that this production has been directed by one of our regular critics, Andy Bewley, and is running at the the Union Theatre where I direct a lot.
It's with considerable relief then that I'm able to report that this revival of Romeo and Juliet, with gay men as the star crossed lovers within the context of two rival Verona football clubs, is packed with good and engaging ideas.

Review: ANGELS IN AMERICA at the National Theatre
By Phil Willmott Tuesday, May 9 2017, 09:57
Angels in America, all seven and a half hours of it, is the best soap opera in town.
If that sounds derogatory think of the very finest TV (melo)drama with heroes, heartbreak, extraordinary villains, epic bravery against the odds, deathbed confessions, revelations and reconciliations, love lost and found, and a journey to self discovery. That's what the National Theatre are currently serving up, either over two evenings of three hour drama or over one extraordinary day which begins at 1pm and spits you out, emotionally and intellectually bruised and battered, to stagger home just before 11pm.
