Elf Musical description
Elf Musical – An elf is for life, not just for Christmas
How does the stage musical differ from the film? For a start, the story is narrated by Santa Claus himself, not Papa Elf. And the sub-plot is slightly different, with Buddy's cynical brother a Santa- denier, someone who doesn't believe in Father Christmas. Other than that, this is the Elf you know and love, brought to the London stage at last to make Britain laugh.. and laugh.
So what if it isn't Christmas? Elf is a magical fairy story for every time of year.
Elf Musical - The story
Little William 'Buddy' Hobbs is an orphan. When he crawls inside Santa's toy sack he mistakenly ends up at the North Pole, where Santa and his magic elves live and work. The elves bring him up, and for all intents and purposes he thinks he's an elf himself.
It takes a few years for Buddy to realise he's much bigger than the rest of the elves and useless at making toys. His elf family tells him the truth and off he goes, with their blessing, to track down his human relatives.
Buddy's dad, Walter Hobbs, is as cynical as the rest of the New Yorkers Buddy meets. There doesn't appear to be a spirit of Christmas in the city at all, and it's a huge problem since people's belief is what powers Santa's magical sleigh.
Faced with the harsh reality that his father is a non-believer and his brother Michael doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy vows to win his relatives over and help the entire city rediscover the real meaning of Christmas.
There's a raft of excellent show tunes to enjoy, including the sing-along greats Christmastown, World's Greatest Dad, In The Way, Sparklejollytwinklejingley, I'll Believe in You, Just Like Him, A Christmas Song and plenty more.
Funny, charming and beautifully silly, Elf is a feel-good masterpiece of a musical and is set to find its way into Britain's hearts at the Dominion theatre in 2022. Don't miss it!

We had high expectations for the show as we are huge fans of the film "Elf." However the musical was very different - starting with the absence of Papa Elf, and Santa narrating the story instead. It was such a shame not to have Papa Elf in the show!! I didn't like that Buddy made suggestions of going to bed with Jovie after "going for food" as this was unnecessary and lowered the tone of the story; it wasn't in the film! There were lots of small changes - like Macy's instead of Gimbles, having "The world's best hot dog" instead of the worl's best coffee. Miles Finch was absent, another writer was mentioned in the story - I forget his name now. When Santa's sleigh crashed in Central Park and singing was needed for Chrsitmas cheer Jovie didn't sing "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" like she did in the film, which was a shame I think. It also seemed odd that Emily was dressed (including hairstyle) as if she was from the 1950's - as she wasn't like this in the film. There was an additional storyline where Jovie's Christmas wish was to have dinner at a posh restaurant whilst it was snowing - I'm not really sure why this was added, it wasn't in the film, and my daughter couldn't understand why it was there. At the end of the story Buddy, Jovie, Walter, Emily and Michael all went to the North Pole, whereas in the film just Buddy, Jovie and their baby, Rosie, went back to see Papa Elf. For some reason the baby was changed from a girl to a boy -"Buddy Junior." All in all we were disappointed that the story had been changed too much. The acting was good and the costumes were pretty. Santa's sleigh was impressive at the end when it "flew" out towards the audience. But I don't think we will be going back to see the show next year!

The show was fab for families, acting was great, music was ok, a few known Christmas songs at end would be good. Setting wasn't brilliant for money paid, £75 each, and sat at back in circle, couldn't see clearly. Very busy, but queues manageable. Restaurants around theatre were good, but advise booking...... Overall was happy, if a little disappointed with settings!!

A fair adaptation of The Elf story which certainly gets you in the festive mood. Ben Forster as Elf is excellent and keeps the musical alive. Everyone else is fairly average I'm afraid to say, which includes lighting and props. Missed opportunity during finale to sing a Christmas song as well. Overall a good evening of Christmas cheese but not raving about this one I'm afraid.

Review: ELF at the Dominion Theatre
by Davor Golub | Thursday, November 12 2015, 12:19
There are certain shows where you are painfully aware that you are just not the target audience. Arriving at Elf, which is playing a Christmas season at the Dominion Theatre, I tried vainly to go with the flow and just accept the evening for the light, Christmas treat it is meant to be. However the relentless predictability and lack of theatrical imagination left me frustrated. Yet despite the controversially inflated ticket prices for a family show, the rest of the audience appeared to be having a great time and the show delivered the kind of family entertainment they were clearly anticipating.
