Elf Musical – An elf is for life, not just for Christmas

How does the stage musical differ from the film? For a start, the story is narrated by Santa Claus himself, not Papa Elf. And the sub-plot is slightly different, with Buddy's cynical brother a Santa- denier, someone who doesn't believe in Father Christmas. Other than that, this is the Elf you know and love, brought to the London stage at last to make Britain laugh.. and laugh.

So what if it isn't Christmas? Elf is a magical fairy story for every time of year.

Elf Musical - The story

Little William 'Buddy' Hobbs is an orphan. When he crawls inside Santa's toy sack he mistakenly ends up at the North Pole, where Santa and his magic elves live and work. The elves bring him up, and for all intents and purposes he thinks he's an elf himself.

It takes a few years for Buddy to realise he's much bigger than the rest of the elves and useless at making toys. His elf family tells him the truth and off he goes, with their blessing, to track down his human relatives.

Buddy's dad, Walter Hobbs, is as cynical as the rest of the New Yorkers Buddy meets. There doesn't appear to be a spirit of Christmas in the city at all, and it's a huge problem since people's belief is what powers Santa's magical sleigh.

Faced with the harsh reality that his father is a non-believer and his brother Michael doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy vows to win his relatives over and help the entire city rediscover the real meaning of Christmas.

There's a raft of excellent show tunes to enjoy, including the sing-along greats Christmastown, World's Greatest Dad, In The Way, Sparklejollytwinklejingley, I'll Believe in You, Just Like Him, A Christmas Song and plenty more.

Funny, charming and beautifully silly, Elf is a feel-good masterpiece of a musical and is set to find its way into Britain's hearts at the Dominion theatre during 2015. Don't miss it!

A Christmas feel good show! :-)

London Box Office customer

Colourful, fun - but very different from the film - disappointing!

We had high expectations for the show as we are huge fans of the film "Elf." However the musical was very different - starting with the absence of Papa Elf, and Santa narrating the story instead. It was such a shame not to have Papa Elf in the show!! I didn't like that Buddy made suggestions of going to bed with Jovie after "going for food" as this was unnecessary and lowered the tone of the story; it wasn't in the film! There were lots of small changes - like Macy's instead of Gimbles, having "The world's best hot dog" instead of the worl's best coffee. Miles Finch was absent, another writer was mentioned in the story - I forget his name now. When Santa's sleigh crashed in Central Park and singing was needed for Chrsitmas cheer Jovie didn't sing "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" like she did in the film, which was a shame I think. It also seemed odd that Emily was dressed (including hairstyle) as if she was from the 1950's - as she wasn't like this in the film. There was an additional storyline where Jovie's Christmas wish was to have dinner at a posh restaurant whilst it was snowing - I'm not really sure why this was added, it wasn't in the film, and my daughter couldn't understand why it was there. At the end of the story Buddy, Jovie, Walter, Emily and Michael all went to the North Pole, whereas in the film just Buddy, Jovie and their baby, Rosie, went back to see Papa Elf. For some reason the baby was changed from a girl to a boy -"Buddy Junior." All in all we were disappointed that the story had been changed too much. The acting was good and the costumes were pretty. Santa's sleigh was impressive at the end when it "flew" out towards the audience. But I don't think we will be going back to see the show next year!

London Box Office customer

Don't expect it to be the same as film

Story was ok if never seen film before but expected actual songs or at least some Xmas songs in the show and there were none. Ok show to watch if never seen film.

The Spirit of Christmas

London Box Office customer

Elf, perfect Christmas cheer!

Slow first half, better second half. Very festive, despite being a simple story. The musical elements were OK, not the best show ever buy brilliant for children.

London Box Office customer

A Must see

Amazing show go see!

London Box Office customer

Unreal! An absolute must see

London Box Office customer

Christmas show with friends

The show was fab for families, acting was great, music was ok, a few known Christmas songs at end would be good. Setting wasn't brilliant for money paid, £75 each, and sat at back in circle, couldn't see clearly. Very busy, but queues manageable. Restaurants around theatre were good, but advise booking...... Overall was happy, if a little disappointed with settings!!

London Box Office customer

Chrimbotastic!!

Excellent show, would recommend it for the whole family.

London Box Office customer

Family fun entertainment but expensive

Great show to see just before Christmas, colourful, has humour but feel tickets are very over priced. Works out expensive for a family and as a show for families a very expensive night out.

London Box Office customer

Festive cheer!

Great Christmas show based on the film but with some differences so don't expect a straight copy of the film. Great singing and story telling - a Christmas must see!

London Box Office customer

Festive fun for everyone with budddddy the elf

Fantastic show for all Lovers of Elf the movie. Great for all ages, a real feel good few hours

London Box Office customer

Christmassy!

London Box Office customer

Santa! I know him!

Ben Forster was outstanding as buddy the elf. A must see for the whole family.

London Box Office customer

Christmas cheese

A fair adaptation of The Elf story which certainly gets you in the festive mood. Ben Forster as Elf is excellent and keeps the musical alive. Everyone else is fairly average I'm afraid to say, which includes lighting and props. Missed opportunity during finale to sing a Christmas song as well. Overall a good evening of Christmas cheese but not raving about this one I'm afraid.

London Box Office customer

A festive treat!

London Box Office customer

magical, comical, wonderful

London Box Office customer

Fantastic!

London Box Office customer

Most expensive

Most expensive tickets then £10 for a program

London Box Office customer

Dissapointing Show

The first half was very boring - very American - with little humour which is what I was expecting the most We all felt that it was no better than an average pantomime Second half picked up a bit but for the very high price of tickets it was not value for money £100 per ticket is a huge amount of money to pay for a family

London Box Office customer

Festive Fun

What an uplifting afternoon with festive moments, colours and happy songs

London Box Office customer

a must see

Good story line singing great. People there all in the Christmas feeling.

London Box Office customer

Colourful and wonderful ! Makes you feel so happy !

London Box Office customer

Lots of roadworks made transport by taxi slow and box office VERY slow dealing with queue for paper tickets. Go by tube. Why can't it be paperless? Also stood in popcorn queue x 10 mins only to find sweet popcorn served elsewhere. Queue there even slower due to school party.... Meant we were late for second half.

London Box Office customer

Perfect Christmas treat for everyone

Absolutely brilliant, flawless show! Would highly recommend it to anyone, even if you don't like Christmas, this will definitely put you in the spirit! It's suitable for all ages and the set was spectacular. Thanks :)

London Box Office customer

A good laugh

The song at the end isn't the original from the film which was a bit disappointing

London Box Office customer

Funny and puts you in the Christmas spirit

Really enjoyed the show but I do not understand why the tickets were so expensive!

London Box Office customer

Brilliant..magically Christmassy

Fab show, 100% recommend...

London Box Office customer

Very Christmassy

Enjoyed the show. The actor who played Elf was excellent and he made the show. A couple of other actors weren't the best but still a great show and well worth watching.

London Box Office customer

Buddy the elf was amazing! I didn't think it would be as funny as the film but it was!! Would definitely go again

London Box Office customer

Must see

London Box Office customer

A fair Musical

Nice scenery, snowy background. Cast cope well with a not particularly easy adaptation from the film. Some scenes too long & it's not for young children. Music/songs fair

London Box Office customer

Fantastic, seasonal musical

London Box Office customer

Not for cottonheaded ninnymuggins

Fantastic show thoroughly enjoyed recommend to all x

London Box Office customer

Gets you in the Christmas mood! :-)

Liked the show, don't think it's for too younger children! (Some in front us and kept talking and moving about through boredom) Spoilt it a little for us! Also didn't sing the main song from the film, which is one of the best parts about the film! Other than that pretty good!

London Box Office customer

Great backgrounds!

Looked so real. Santa sleigh at the end was brill. Actor playing Buddy was absolutely brilliant

London Box Office customer

Brilliant

London Box Office customer

Superb show

I wasn't sure about booking this show due to the high price but it was absolutely worth every penny. The production is fantastic for all ages & it's such a feel good show that if you don't feel Christmassy before you go in you most certainly will by the time you come out.

London Box Office customer

Worth every penny! Good for kids!

Amazing expierence! I would definitely see it again! (Shame the musical ends in January) Great actors & the story line is pretty much the same as the film! Go buy your tickets if you haven't already!

London Box Office customer

Brilliant!

Brilliant from start to finish!

London Box Office customer

Disappointed we didn't see the finale!

Extremely disappointed that due to a technical error we didn't get to see the show finale. My wife was terribly upset as she had looked forward to this for a long time and tickets were not cheap!

London Box Office customer

Christmas show

London Box Office customer

Festive

Perfect show for my ten year old grand daughter

London Box Office customer

Loved it

The show was amazing from the beginning to the end.

London Box Office customer

Superb show - pity about the prices!

The show was brilliant and would appeal to all. My 3 year old grandson was engrossed throughout. The seat price was expensive - but then on top of that had to pay a further £1 to borrow a booster seat! £10 for a programme and the expensive ice cream/refreshments is greedy

London Box Office customer

Unreal

I honestly had the best night last night! So many smiles and lots of laughter! Kimberley Walsh blew me away! I had goosebumps throughout! Definitely want to go again!!

London Box Office customer

Brilliant!

I loved this show, Ben Forster was brilliant. It was easy watching and funny.

London Box Office customer

Elf was everything you'd expect it to be. A great transition from film to stage with great sparkly songs that get you smiling!!

London Box Office customer

The best show I've seen

What a show! I've seen a few in London but this tops them all. I will be recommending the show to all my family and friends, worth every penny.

London Box Office customer

Fantastic!

My mum (46) and sister (13) and me (18) went to see elf and thought it was EXCELLENT! The man who plays elf have absolutely nailed it. Although there are slight changes/differences between the show and film we still loved it! I particularly loves the sleigh at the end but I won't say any more than that as I don't want to spoil it. Our seats said restricted view but it wasn't our view was great and the staff were friendly and chatty before and after the show!

London Box Office customer

My girls and I loved the Film and thought the play complete with title was excellent

The show was excellent but must say the Programme price at £10 after paying £58.50 per ticket was as usual expensive.

London Box Office customer

Would be awesome with more Christmas songs.

London Box Office customer

Acting

Great show, buddy was amazing! The little boy and Kimberley's acting wasn't up to scratch, American accents weren't the best

London Box Office customer

Great entertainment

All the cast were excellent and it was a great festive show.

London Box Office customer

Fantastic

A bit privet but well worth the money. An uplifting show with lots going on.

London Box Office customer

Must see

Buddy ruled the show from start to finish with a cast that amazed.Have your Christmas spirit rebooted

London Box Office customer

Brilliant

This is my daughter's favourite film and she (age 8) and I wasn't disappointed at all and the snow was an added bonus as we got covered.

Review: ELF at the Dominion Theatre

12 Nov 2015

Elf: The Musical There are certain shows where you are painfully aware that you are just not the target audience. Arriving at Elf, which is playing a Christmas season at the Dominion Theatre, I tried vainly to go with the flow and just accept the evening for the light, Christmas treat it is meant to be. However the relentless predictability and lack of theatrical imagination left me frustrated. Yet despite the controversially inflated ticket prices for a family show, the rest of the audience appeared to be having a great time and the show delivered the kind of family entertainment they were clearly anticipating.

Full cast announced for West End run of Elf

24 Aug 2015

Elf The Musical The full cast has been revealed for the upcoming West End production of Elf, due to open at the Dominion Theatre from 24 October 2015.

Could Elf the musical come to the West End?

11 Feb 2015

Elf the musical Word of the theatrical grapevine is that the musical adaptation of the cult 2003 Christmas film Elf, that stared Will Farrell, could be coming to the West End this Christmas.

The production is rumoured to arrive at the Dominion Theatre from 24 October 2015 and run for a very limited 10-week run over the Christmas period.
