The internationally acclaimed opera director Julia Burbach will present Cinderella (La Cenerentola) for the 21st Century. The production will debut in ENO's 2025/26 season this month.
The cast of Cinderella.
Cinderella will feature a new English translation by Christopher Cowell. This new production by Burbach will set the action in contemporary London, in our modern age of celebrity.
It will feature a dynamic cast of operatic talent, offering audiences a modern-day reimagining of Rossini's ever-popular romantic opera. Audiences can expect some twists and surprises in this show at the London Coliseum; instead of a Fairy Godmother, Cinderella and her Prince Charming, Don Ramiro, are guided by a group of ancestral spirits, voiced by the chorus of ENO. And there are pumpkins, mice and a glass slipper – though not where you might think.
Director Julia Burbach said: ‘Let's all remember how important it is to take humour seriously. Rossini certainly knew this when creating Cenerentola, a timeless classic filled with great characters, confusion, romance, passion, charm, beauty, laughter and an important human message. I hope we can bring the audience an evening at the theatre that makes them feel lighter on their feet when they leave.’
The cast includes Deepa Johnny as Cinderella, Aaron Godfrey-Mayes as Don Ramiro, David Ireland as Alidoro, the occasional 'fairy godmother', and long-term mentor to Prince Don Ramiro. Simon Bailey will play the role of Cinderella's flawed father, Don Magnifico. Cinderella's step-sisters will be played by Grace Durham and Isabella Peters. Completing the cast is Charles Rice as Don Ramiro's loyal assistant.
Cinderella will play at the London Coliseum for 6 performances from 27 September to 4 October 2025.
