What is Jesus Christ Superstar about?

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's jaw-dropping rock opera was first released as a concept album in 1970 before premiering on Broadway in 1971 and the West End in the following year. It tells the story of the last seven days of Jesus Christ's life, with a focus on his turbulent relationship with Judas Iscariot, who would go on to betray him, and with Mary Magdalene, as well as the political ramifications and emotional drama surrounding his crucifixion.

2019 was the last time Londoners got to experience the spectacle and magic of this iconic classic musical, but now it's back in London, directed by Tim Sheader, who reunites with creative designer Tom Scutt and choreographer Drew McOnie after they last presented the show at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2016 and 2017. Sam Ryder makes his West End debut in the role of Jesus, after coming in second in the 2022 Eurovision with his hit “Spaceman”. Ryder expressed his excitement about taking on one of the most iconic roles in theatre, saying, 'I'm honoured to take on this responsibility as I follow in the footsteps of rock vocal titans.'
