A new production of Henrik Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea has been written and directed by Simon Stone for its London run at the Bridge Theatre from September.
The cast of The Lady from the Sea at Bridge Theatre.
Joining the previously announced Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) as Ellida and Andrew Lincoln (A Christmas Carol, The Old Vic) as Edward are Isobel Akuwudike (The Road Trip) as Hilda, Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist) as Heath, Brendan Cowell (Yerma, Young Vic) as Finn Marcet, John Macmillan (House of the Dragon) as Lyle, and Gracie Oddie-James (Grantchester) as Asa.
Ibsen's most radically modern portrayal of a woman's fight for autonomy in her relationship, The Lady From The Sea, follows Ellida, who is fearful she has settled too easily for her comfortable life as a well-off doctor's wife. When a lover from her past appears, she has to decide whether she chooses the life she has now built or the one she left behind.
Stone is known for his radical reimaginings of classic works like Yerma at the Young Vic and Phaedra at the National Theatre. This new production of The Lady from the Sea will mark his debut at the Bridge Theatre.
The creative team consists of set designer Lizzie Clachan (The Witches, National Theatre), costume designer Mel Page (Phaedra, National Theatre), composition and sound designer Stefan Gregory (Yerma, Young Vic), lighting designer Nick Schlieper (The Picture of Dorian Gray, Theatre Royal Haymarket), casting director Jessica Ronane CDG (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), and assistant designer Pip Terry (The Time Traveller’s Wife, Apollo Theatre).
The Lady from the Sea will play at the Bridge Theatre from 10 September to 8 November 2025. The production will follow A Midsummer Night's Dream, which concludes its run on 23 August.
