Peter Grimes in London
In a small coastal town, fisherman Peter Grimes finds his community turning against him when his apprentice dies under mysterious circumstances at sea. Though he's cleared of legal guilt, the townspeople are convinced Peter was to blame, and their judgment and hostility make him a social outcast. Determined to prove his innocence, Peter takes on another apprentice, but the loneliness of life at sea and the pressure of social exclusion causes his fragile grip on reality to slip. Tragedy strikes again when his second apprentice dies and Peter, consumed by guilt and madness, turns to the sea for an escape.
Benjamin Britten's bleak operatic parable explores the dark realities of mob mentality and paranoia, set to an evocative score filled with tension and dread. Deborah Warner's (Billy Budd, Wozzeck) stunning contemporary staging of this brooding opera paints a searing picture of the tragic conflict between individual and society, with a story of vulnerability and volatility. Music Director of The Royal Opera Jakub Hrů conducts and Allan Clayton, Bryn Terfel and Maria Bengtsson star in this harrowing story of exile and alienation. Britten's work is characterised by emotional richness, technical complexity, and a fascinating ability to connect human drama with natural and social forces. Opera lovers will be thrilled and moved by the psychological depth and atmospheric intensity of Peter Grimes, featuring thrilling arias such as 'Now the Great Bear and Pleiades.'
Don't miss this powerful new staging of Britten's classic story about guilt, madness, and isolation, set to an unforgettably stirring score.
