Ruthless! The Musical in London
Ruthless! The Musical, sounds pretty hardcore! Don’t worry, it’s not one of those extreme, dark musicals that you hear so much about (do you? A dark, disturbing musical??). Ruthless! The Musical is a spoof of Broadway shows like Gypsy or Mame. And the central character is an 8-year old girl, who when it premiered in 1992, was played by both Natalie Portman and Britney Spears. They’re not scary, surely?
True, a musical about an 8-year old girl must be pretty upbeat and sweet then? Well, not quite. This 8-year old girl is pretty talents at performing. And she really wants to get the lead in her school play. But it seems that she’ll stop at nothing to get what she wants… Gulp! Gotta admire that level of determination…
Sounds like a recipe for disaster, I’m sold! Who’s in this version then? From announcements made so far, the cast will include Jason Gardiner (yes, him off Dancing on Ice), Lara Denning (she was last in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾) and Tracie Bennett. Now Tracie just stepped off the Follies stage at the National Theatre (the one with Imelda Staunton in it) and is a two-time Olivier Award winner musical stage star. Pretty impressive!

Occasional bad language (very little) - but just warning over-protective parents. Excellent dark humour covered with a little slapstick!

Review: RUTHLESS at the Arts Theatre

RUTHLESS is a small scale, off Broadway musical from 1992 by Joel Paley and Marvin Laird, with just 6 characters, all of them female, one played by a man in drag. The drag element is a useful way to describing the tone of the piece which presents women not as nuanced 3 dimensional characters but as the kind of grotesques that some gay men like to dress up as and emulate.
