Camille Saint-Saens's grand opera Samson et Dalila reimagines the biblical story of Samson and Delilah in this story of passion, faith, and temptation. Samson, leader of the oppressed Hebrews and known for his superhuman strength, rouses his people to war against the oppressive Philistines. But when he's seduced by Dalila, a Philistine woman, his faith and strength, both spiritual and physical, will be tested. When Dalila betrays him and steals the source of his power, Samson must turn to God to take his revenge and protect his people.
Richard Jones's vibrant, electric staging of this biblical epic returns, bursting with energy and "wild colour" (The Telegraph). Alexander Soddy conducts and SeokJong Baek and Aigul Akhmetshina star as Samson and Dalila in this thrilling tale of seduction and power. This is one of the most influential works by musical prodigy and master of opera Camille Saint-Saens, and a classic example of an extravagant, sophisticated grand opera. Opera lovers will instantly recognise its most famous aria, Dalia's seductive 'Mon coeur s'ouvre à ta voix' (Softly awakes my heart), and newcomers will be enthralled by this powerful, harrowing take on a familiar biblical story.
