Studio Ghibli Inc. is a respected Japanese animation studio based in Koganei, Tokyo, a darling of the international animation industry. Now the brilliant Studio Ghibli classic Spirited Away is coming to London's West End for 2024, beautifully adapted for the stage and produced in the original Japanese with English subtitles.

On stage for a three month run, this epic stage production is in theatreland for its European premiere at the London Coliseum. It’s written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli, a legend in his own lifetime, and the result is a delightful live version of the classic Japanese hand-drawn animation that first wove its magic more than twenty years ago. No wonder it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

John Caird, the Tony award winning director of Les Misérables, heads things up, and this is his first venture into bringing an animated story to the stage. The Toho Theatrical Department is also involved, which originally took the show on tour around Japan throughout 2022. A live orchestra and spectacular puppetry complete the picture as the show re-imagines the beautiful yet disturbing adventure of the ten year old girl Chihiro Ogino.

The President of TOHO Co Ltd, Hiroyasu Matsuoka, agrees. "Since the 1970s, Toho has licensed original musicals for overseas productions, but for the first time in over 90 years of Toho's history, a Japan-born company is crossing the sea and going out to the world for a three-month run, to perform in the Japanese language. It is my sincere hope that Chihiro, created by director Hayao Miyazaki, producer Toshio Suzuki, and everyone at Studio Ghibli, will be loved even more in theatres all across the world."

What's the plot of Spirited Away?

When ten year old Chihiro gets trapped in a strange world populated by weird spirits and her family mysteriously transforms, she needs to call on every scrap of courage she has to free them and get back to the real world.

Based on the Oscar-winning film, this stage adaptation comes with a sensational film score by Joe Hisaishi. The creative team includes Jon Bausor, whose spectacular set design will blow your mind, plus stunning puppet designs by Toby Olié, choreography by Shigehiro Ide, and extraordinary costumes by Sachiko Nakahara.
