The Bridge in London
Every year, Alaa's mother sends a gift of separation from her home in Jenin to her sister in Amman: a container of olive oil from Alaa's grandfather's olive trees, a symbol of home. Every year, Alaa is the one to deliver it. Carrying a large yellow container, he makes this journey along with thousands of other Palestinians, crossing the King Hussein Bridge in the heart of Jordan Valley which is the only way Palestinians in the West Bank are allowed to leave or return home. Along the way, he encounters other travellers, each with their own unique stories, and all the while the container leaks, dripping oil throughout its journey through border crossings, Israeli occupation, and into Jordan.
Palestinian actor and comedian Alaa Shehada returns following his heartfelt and hilarious Scotsman Fringe First winning debut, The Horse of Jenin, with another powerful piece of Palestinian storytelling that feels urgent, timely, and devastating. Once again, he brings his high-energy mix of storytelling, stand-up and physical comedy to this unique and clever play. Set against the backdrop of a bizarre road trip, The Bridge is a very human tale of family and connection, hope and joy, which unabashedly explores the brutal truths of the impacts of colonialism and the broken promises of the British in Palestine. Both funny and moving, it unpacks real-life human experiences through compelling theatre.
Book now to experience a humorous but deeply stirring story from one of the most impactful Palestinian storytellers in theatre.
