Breaking the Waves - English National Opera in London

On a remote Scottish island, within a strict religious community, the deeply devout Bess falls in love with oil rig worker Jan and marries him. But their happiness is cut short when a terrible accident leaves Jan paralysed. No longer able to be intimate with his wife, he asks Bess to have sex with other men and describe the experience to him, convinced that this will help him heal. Bess, believing it's God's will, embarks on a series of dangerous sexual encounters with strangers, seeing it as the ultimate test of faith. Will her sacrifice save the man she loves or will she be a victim of a system indifferent to her suffering?

Adapted from Lars von Trier's multi-award-winning 1996 film of the same name, Missy Mazzoli's Breaking the Waves is one of the most powerful contemporary operas of our time, exploring faith, heartbreak and loss with unflinching emotional intensity. Praised as 'Brooklyn's post-millennial Mozart' (Time Out), Mazzoli's music is influenced both by Britten and the minimalist music of Philip Glass in its use of hypnotic rhythmic pattern. What emerges is a hauntingly beautiful story, packed with psychological depth and a soaring cinematic quality. Directed by Tinuke Craig and conducted by Joana Carneiro, Breaking the Waves stars Lauren Snouffer as Bess in her ENO debut and Liam James Karai as Jan.

Book now and experience a powerful story of love and faith like nothing else you've seen before.
