Faust in London

This Spring, one of the world's most popular operas from the 1860s until World War II, will come to the Royal Opera House. Directed by David McVicar, Faust will take audiences on the age-old journey of ambition, temptation, and redemption, a tale that has been fascinating for so long. Experience it for a limited time only.

About Faust

An opera in five acts, Faust is a philosopher who has devoted his life to the study of science. Now disillusioned with life, he calls on Satan to help him. The devil Méphistophélès appears and gives the philosopher a choice; he can have youth and the beautiful Marguerite, but only in exchange for his soul. Set in Second Empire Paris, Faust discovers whether he can repent his actions and his soul in time.

Faust Cast and Creatives

Faust will be conducted by Dan Ettinger. The cast includes Michael Fabiano as Faust, Irina Lungu as Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as Méphistophélès. They will be joined by the Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

With music by Charles-François Gounod, the creative team includes libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, revival director Bruno Ravella, set designer Charles Edwards, costume designer Brigitte Reiffenstuel, lighting designer Paule Constable, choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan and revival choreographer Emmanuel Obeya.

Absolutely Fantastic

The show was spectacular, it was my first time at the opera and I was fascinated. The singers, dancers and actors were absolutely amazing. I loved the interpretation of the devil (Mephistopheles). The ballet part blew my mind. It was one of the best artistic experiences I’ve ever had.

Powerful timeless tale of human nature

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and was particularly drawn to it because it was based on Goethe's classic tale.I enjoyed the music as it was generally melodic and dramatic .The acting seemed good particularly the actor playing Mephistopheles who was wittily demonic. The lighting was very atmospheric in places and the sets were very good.My one criticism is that I paid £204 for a swat but there was little leg room which was uncomfortable and cramped and a little painful at times.I would have thought that the money I paid would have allowed me to stretch my legs. I think the problem here is with the seating being right up next to the wooden barrier at the front of the circle.
