Akram Khan's Giselle in London
Akram Khan’s sensational, breathtaking reimagining of Giselle first took to the stage in 2016 at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. Now it returns to the West End at the London Coliseum in January 2026 with this fresh, modern adaptation of the classic story of love and betrayal. Akram Khan directs and choreographs, with lighting by Mark Henderson, set design by Tim Yip, and a score by Vincenzo Lamagna, adapted from the original by Adolphe Adam and performed by the English National Ballet Philharmonic.
Why should you watch Giselle?
- Whether you’re new to this 19th century ballet or have seen and loved it before, you’ll be mesmerised by Akram Khan’s bold reimagining of this classic story, with a choreography that blends ballet with Kathak, an Indian classical dance.
- Akram Khan’s adaptation of Giselle has earned soaring praise from critics, with The Sunday Express calling it ‘staggeringly beautiful and devastating’ and The Stage calling it ‘sensational’.
- With lighting by Mark Henderson and set design by Academy Award-winner Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) depicting the ominous factory haunted by vengeful ghosts, audiences will be immersed the murky, dreamy world of Giselle.
What is Giselle about?
First performed in 1841, Giselle is a French romantic ballet about a young peasant woman who falls in love with a nobleman. In this adaptation, Giselle lives in a community of migrant workers called the Outcasts, oppressed and exploited by the factory Landlords living on the other side of the wall that separates them. When Giselle’s love for Albrecht, a Landlord, leads to her tragic death, she joins the Wilis, the ghosts of wronged women seeking retribution.
Akram Khan MBE is a dancer and choreographer of Bangladeshi origin, whose dance practice is rooted in classical Kathak dance. Giselle is inspired by a fusion of ballet and Kathak, but also reimagines the classic story through the plight of exploited migrant workers, bringing a bold and harrowing reinterpretation to an old and familiar story of a woman betrayed by her lover.
Giselle opens at the London Coliseum on January 15th 2026, so don’t miss your chance to experience this breath-taking story of love and sacrifice, retold in a way never seen before.

Great show, emotional eveningTerrific performance of Giselle from a company with a incredible back story. The singing of the Ukrainian national anthem at the end was unforgettable, moving, powerful. Thank you and God speed to all the company. I hope to see you perform in Kyiv one day.

Ukraine BalletA very moving performance considering the hardships the dancers had to go through to perform especially the male dancers who needed permission to leave the Country to dance. Also they had just learned that one of their dancers had been killed fighting .
