Goodnight Mr Tom in London

Looking for seasonal theatre shows? Head for the splendid Duke of York's theatre for a proper Christmas treat, a fantastic weepie of a musical that'll see you crying and laughing at the same time, that potent mixture of glad and sad that always leaves audiences touched and delighted. There's nothing like a happy ending to warm the cockles of your heart in the dead of a cold British winter!

David Wood 's version of Michelle Magorian's best-selling children's book was a big hit in the capital a few years ago, transferring from The Chichester Festival theatre to win an Oliver Award. It was also adapted for the telly, starring the sadly-missed John Thaw of Morse fame.

Goodnight Mr Tom – The story

The Second World War is looming and like thousands of other English youngsters, the poor London urchin William Beech is evacuated to the countryside for safety. Arriving in a place so exotic and strange he doesn't know what to make of it, far away from his city comfort zone, William has no idea what to expect.

William's mum habitually abused her son mercilessly, both emotionally and physically. So while he misses home, he starts to feel happier than he's ever been before thanks to the gentle, kind, reclusive old man Tom Oakley, with whom he's billeted. Lonely Tom offers real friendship, giving William strength when his mother decides she wants him home and drags him back to London.

As The Guardian theatre critic Michael Billington said about this production in 2013, it's a show that is "unafraid to target the emotions". And that's an understatement. It's both charming and harrowing, the perfect show for kids and adults alike, a real family-friendly story and a critically acclaimed production.

Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph's reviewer, set the scene when he saw the same production in its original incarnation at Chichester. He said:

A young boy stands before us. He is meek, downcast, achingly vulnerable. He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. You can tell, just by looking at him, that this isn't your typical wartime evacuee. This lad flinches in the presence of adults, barely touches his food, and terrible bruises lurk under his rolled-up socks.

How's that for a quick peep into just how heartbreaking the original scenes are? You will probably cry. Audiences leave in floods of tears... but in a good way. Do William and Tom enjoy a happy ending? Come along and find out.

Memories of Wartime

This is the second time that I have seen this play - on both occasions in the company of my grandchildren. It strongly evokes my personal memories of my evacuation, but whilst I felt very upset at being away from home, I knew that when I returned it would be to a loving family. In their different ways William and Mr. Tom share a tragic story story, but the love that Mr.Tom gives to William brings back to him the family that he had long ago so sadly lost. It is a play set in darker times, but it underlines of the importance of a loving family life that is as true to-day as then. Frank Farmer

Captivating!

We watched the show as a family, our 7 and 9 year olds were writhing with excitement and emotion. A fantastic production which transported us back to the '40's. Fantastic acting and the intimacy of the theatre completed our experience.

Could do better

Good but not as convincing as film version. No need to say 'I love you' or 'he called me dad'. It's implicit.

Wonderful family play

My 11yr old nephew and thoroughly enjoyed the show in all its aspects. The characters were excellently portrayed. The set and props were very cleverly used and you actually forget that Sammy the collie dog is puppet. The lighting and sound complemented the show well especially in William's nightmare. Brilliant play for all generations.

Goodnight Mr Tom If the rumours are true, the West End, increasingly dominated by productions aimed at families, will soon have yet another heart warming show suitable for all ages.

A dramatisation of the war time weepy, GOODNIGHT MR TOM may well be coming to the Duke of Yorks Theatre.
