Iphigenie en Tauride - English National Opera in London
Iphigénie and her brother Oreste are the offspring of the most blood-soaked dynasty in Greek history, the children of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Separated from each other, Iphigenie ends up at a forlorn temple on a remote island, dreaming of being reunited with her brother, who has been driven to the edge of madness. When a mysterious stranger washes up on the island with news of her family's downfall, Iphigenie fears the worst, but there may be more to the stranger than meets the eye. What does fate have in store for these doomed siblings?
Gluck's rarely performed opera, Iphigénie en Tauride, makes its ENO debut in a new staging by Olivier award-winning director Lyndsey Turner, with Baroque specialist David Bates making his ENO debut on the podium. It will be performed in its original French libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard with English surtitles projected above the stage. Christine Rice leads the cast as Iphigénie after her triumphant performance in Dead Man Walking, with Oreste played by Jacques Imbrailo. Widely regarded as Gluck's most important work, Iphigénie en Tauride is a heartbreaking story of a family divided by fate and united by hope, a powerful take on a classic Greek myth.
