Jersey Boys in London

Starring:

Jon Lee, Ryan Molloy, Jon Boydon

Sing along to Jersey Boys, a triumphant real-life tale

Olivier and Tony Award-winning Jersey Boys is gripping stuff. If you’re a baby Boomer you’ll remember Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, masters of tuneful soul music who topped the charts throughout the ‘60s and into the ‘70s. Jersey Boys tells the tale of the band in a triumphant stage show written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, directed by Des Mcanuff, with beautiful music by songwriter and musician Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe. In fact the music is so good that the cast album won a Grammy Award, so you’re in for a real West End treat.

It’s interesting to note that Steven Spielberg has bought the film rights to Jersey Boys, but has decided to wait until the musical version is taken off stage before making the story into a movie. But he might have a long wait, since Jersey Boys tickets are still flying off the shelves and delighting audiences every night.

Jersey Boys - The story

When singer and musician Tommy DeVito first hears Frankie Valli sing, he knows he’s found a star. Persuading Valli to join his group, they take the music business by storm.

The fascinating lives, times, loves and musical hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons come to vibrant life in this amazing stage production that uncovers the band’s chequered history. You’ll discover where the band members came from, what made them tick, who they loved and how misfortune dogged their careers, with gangland connections, debt, imprisonment and jealousy taking their toll.

The band released a stream of huge hits and eventually became one of the most successful pop music sensations of all time, until heartbreak, failed relationships and financial disasters led to their final break-up. Their music still resonates with audiences of every age and taste today. By the end of the show you’ll be dancing in your seat, touched and astonished by the band’s unique and often torrid story.

As each band member takes centre stage to reveal their own personal experiences, the plot unfolds accompanied by a wealth of foot-tapping original smash hits like Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Big Girls Don’t Cry, December 1963 (Oh, What a Night), Walk Like a Man, Working My Way Back To You and Bye, Baby.

Very entertaining show. I was going to recommend it to anyone but there was a bit of swearing involved so probably not suitable for young children. Music was great and the actors fabulous!

Nostalgic night out

Great musical drama with a fantastic authentic musical sound. Franki Valli being a unusual very recognizable vocal, I was amazed at the authenticity of the actors singing performance. Simply Superb, as was the whole ensemble. Very colorful, language that actually adds to the accuracy of the story telling. I would most definitely watch this show again.

flat ...

Disappointingly flat show, very little star quality, atmosphere was flat, some clever staging , drunken audience talking and walking around, really needs a breath of fresh air as performers only smiled a couple of times...

Great story, really good music

The good things about the show were the storyline and music (I didn't realise the issues the group had during their stay together). Didn't like the swearing; thought there was too much - not a prude but it interfered with the entertaining story.

really enjoyed the show. Was a bit of a slow start but the music was fantastic. Only downside was the amount of swearing. I know the f word is relevant to the area but it can put a lot of people off. I would rather it was toned down a bit as it seemed to be over-used.

Jersey Boys - a show for all seasons!

This is the second time I have seen the show, I went 3 yrs ago with a friend when in London on a work trip from "up North", not knowing what to expect and we both loved it! This time I asked my partner to treat me for my birthday as I have wanted to share the experience with him since I first saw it. It did not disappoint the second time round - you will laugh and cry at the story, and sing and cheer to the music, and coming out of the theatre into snowy London just added to the magic - so don't let the weather put you off!

My thoughts on this show

I am an avid Seasons fan but I thought the show was too wordy with too much New Joisey banter. The sound of the 4 Seasons was excellent only to be spoiled by the songs being interrupted because someone thought that smart ass phrases would be more enjoyable than a completed song. Overall I enjoyed the show but please let us hear more of the songs which were superbly performed by the guys.
