La Traviata in London
Violetta, the beautiful, celebrated Parisian courtesan, has just returned to public life and meets Alfredo Germont at one of her lavish parties. The two fall in love, but Alfredo’s father disapproves of his son and heir marrying a courtesan. Heartbroken, Violetta chooses to leave her lover to protect his reputation. Alfredo follows her to Paris, determined to win her back, even when he finds her with her former patron, Baron Douphol.
Richard Eyre directs and Antonello Manacorda and Giacomo Sagripanti conduct Verdi’s devastatingly beautiful 19th opera about class divides and doomed love. La Traviata (meaning 'she who has strayed from the path') is inspired by the life and death of the real-life Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. Verdi paints a complex, sympathetic portrait of the fiercely loving and determined Violetta, making her one of the most iconic characters in opera. The sublime score features some of Verdi's most famous pieces, from Violetta's introspective 'Ah fors'è lui' ('Could it be him') to her inspirting, assertive 'Sempre libera' ('I must always be free') to one of opera's most well-known melodies, the 'Brindisi' chorus (also known as the Drinking Song). All this makes La Traviata a favourite among opera enthusiasts and a perfect opera for first-timers, and overall an unmissable experience.

Modern and minimalist approach that may not be to everyone’s likingCleverly done to modernise the set, clothing and minimalist the props. It did focus attention in the music but it’s a shame to lose the colour and glamour of traditional opera.
