All About My Neighbour Totoro

This is an adaption of the incredibly popular 1988 animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki. It’s brought to the stage by the original composer Joe Hisaishi and it’s a fresh new adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company. It’s written by the playwright Tom Morton-Smith.

The show is directed by Phelim McDermott. The production design is by Tom Pye and the costume design by Kimie Nakano. Lighting design comes from Jessica Hung Han Yun. Described as a ‘ground-breaking production’, it stars puppetry created by Basil Twist and music from Joe Hisaishi's iconic score. The brand new orchestration comes from Will Stuart, performed live on stage. The sound design is by Tony Gayle. And this is where you can buy cheap tickets for My Neighbour Totoro.

The Story of My Neighbour Totoro

‘Enchanting’ is what this lovely story is being called. It delves into the fantasy world of childhood and explores the transformative power of the human imagination. And it follows two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, through one magical summer.

The girls’ mum is recovering from an illness in a countryside hospital. Their dad moves them to a rural area so they can be closer to her. The girls gradually discover their lovely surroundings. The younger sister Mei comes across amazing forest creatures and the ancient protector of the woodland, who she calls Totoro. Her sister doesn't believe her at first but soon they’re both enjoying exciting adventures with their new neighbours. Together, the sisters find themselves transported to an ancient realm of spirits, sprites, and natural wonders.

My Neighbour Totoro offers audiences a magical journey into the wonders of childhood imagination and the beauty of friendship. One of the most talked about shows that has hit the city in recent years, witness the jaw-dropping experience of this show for yourself!

The faithful adaptation of a movie I did not like

The play captures everything about the animated film: the screamed, dialogue and shameless overacting, as well as the disconnected storyline. Even if you like the film, which was visually interesting and weird, there is no point to this play being twice as long as the movie. The puppeteering is big and impressive, but there is nothing, nothing new brought to the second act. You could leave at intermission and not miss a thing.

Enchanting

We went to see the show as a family with kids aged 7, 9, 12, and 14 years old, including two boys who weren’t very convinced at first. They all loved it and were impressed with the acting, the magnificent sets and staging, and the use of puppets. Everything is magical. It’s truly a show worth seeing. I highly recommend it, and the theater itself is also excellent.

A must see show done in true Japanese style with a lot of feeling .

This show kept me captivated from the first 5 minutes and I am 78 years of age. I found it deeply moving and thought provoking in parts. It flows nicely with lots of humour and sensitivity. It has a nice ending and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of taking me back into a sense of childhood and in places deeper thought that life has ups and downs but at the end of the day things can turnniut not as bad as you first thought.

A magical tale

An amazing spectacle - despite the wonderful performances of the cast, the story itself did not match the staging/puppetry. Recommended especially for young theatregoers and Studio Ghibli fans.

We loved it. I booked it a year ago having read good reviews then. I had forgotten why I booked it, and nearly lost the tickets. It is unique, and had some breathtaking moments. I went with my partner but I am going to book to go again with older my grandchildren, aged 9 to 14.
