About My Neighbour Totoro Tickets

My Neighbour Totoro description

This is the return of the Japanese creative talent at Studio Ghibli's My Neighbour Totoro. It’s live at the Barbican for autumn 2023. In collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi are thrilled to present a beautiful coming of age story that’ll see you completely captivated from start to finish.

The show is directed by Phelim McDermott. The production design is by Tom Pye and the costume design by Kimie Nakano. Lighting design comes from Jessica Hung Han Yun. Described as a ‘ground-breaking production’, it stars puppetry created by Basil Twist and music from Joe Hisaishi's iconic score. The brand new orchestration comes from Will Stuart, performed live on stage. The sound design is by Tony Gayle. And this is where you can buy cheap tickets for My Neighbour Totoro.

What's the plot of My Neighbour Totoro?

‘Enchanting’ is what this lovely story is being called. It delves into the fantasy world of childhood and explores the transformative power of the human imagination. And it follows two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, through one magical summer.

The girls’ mum is recovering from an illness in a countryside hospital. Their dad moves them to a rural area so they can be closer to her. The girls gradually discover their lovely surroundings. The younger sister Mei comes across amazing forest creatures and the ancient protector of the woodland, who she calls Totoro. Her sister doesn't believe her at first but soon they’re both enjoying exciting adventures with their new neighbours. Together, the sisters find themselves transported to an ancient realm of spirits, sprites, and natural wonders.

This is an adaption of the incredibly popular 1988 animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki. It’s brought to the stage by the original composer Joe Hisaishi and it’s a fresh new adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company. It’s written by the playwright Tom Morton-Smith.

We’re fully expecting this to be a runaway success, with tickets selling like hot cakes, so make sure you buy yours in good time.

Who is My Neighbour Totoro for?

My Neighbour Totoro will be on stage at the Barbican for a strictly limited season, from 21st November 2023 until 21st January 2024, designed for all generations to enjoy. The theatre suggests a lower age limit of six years old, but younger children are welcome. Please bear in mind the show will be quite long, with loud noises in places, which might be scary for young children. It isn’t suitable for children younger than four years old, including babies, and children must stay in their seats throughout the show.

My Neighbour Totoro There are two types of people in the world: people who love Studio Ghibli movies, and people who’ve never heard of them. My Neighbour Totoro will be most loved by the former group, but just about enjoyable by the latter.

After considerable advance publicity and marketing, the RSC’s joint venture with Joe Hisaishi to bring MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO to the stage, has opened and given early audiences and reviewers much to ponder.
